New Picture Varnishes

Varnishes spend their lives spread out as thin films exposed to the air, which is an oxidizing environment. The energy for the chemical reaction leading to oxidation is most likely to come from the light shining on the picture. Thus deterioration of a varnish is mainly a matter of photochemical oxidation.
