After a shift to the new host Apis mellifera during the first half of the last century, the parasite dispersed world wide and is currently considered the major threat for apiculture.

The Varroa mite in China had long been known as Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans. Zhou et al. (2004) clarified that there was only one species V. destructor present in China.
