Detection of resistance in US Varroa jacobsoni Oud. (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) to the acaricide fluvalinate [PDF]
Populations of Varroa jacobsoni Oud. from three geographic regions of the United States were assayed for resistance to fluvalinate. A bioassay using a discriminating concentration estimated to cause approximately 80-90 % mortality in a fluvalinate-susceptible strain of V. jacobsoni was used to compare percent mortalities between locations.

Entomologia Generalis, 1995Embryonic development in the parasitic honeybee mite Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans 1904 was studied by scanning electron microscopy with special emphasis on the formation of the legs (pedes). Immediately after segmentation of the germ band stage the anlagen of all the 6 pairs of extremities are formed in the prosoma.

A detailed description of the oocytes ripe??ning processes, blastulation, gastrulation and organogenesis is presented. Organogenetic process is divided in four essential stages: early tissues differentiation, prelarval morpho??genesis, larval morphogenesis, protonymphal morphogenesis.

A detailed description is given to internal and external chelicerae muscles, pedipalp muscles, a complex of pharynx muscles, tritosternum muscle. Chelicera protractor muscles are not found. It is shown that specialization of the mite to feed on bee haemolymph induces no essential rearrangements in the muscular system of the gnathosoma.

The mite Varroa jacobsoni was reared in artificial gelatin cells under laboratory conditions and the possible presence of factors inhibiting Varroa reproduction was studied. In cells infested with three mites, the mean offspring per female was reduced to 75% of that in singly infested cells.

Mites in the genus Varroa are the primary parasites of honey bees on several continents. Genetic analyses based on Varroa mitochondrial DNA have played a central role in establishing Varroa taxonomy and dispersal. Here we present the complete mitochondrial sequence of the important honey bee pest Varroa destructor. This species has a relatively compact

A crude oil extract of neem seed (Azadirachta indica, Sapindales: Meliaceae) was evaluated for repellency on Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman. Burgerjon's tower was used to spray worker bee pupae with 0.0, 0.3, 0.7, 1.3, 2.6, 5.3, 10.6 and 21.1% neem extract concentrations. Sprayed pupae were attached to observation arenas and incubated at 32 ± 2°

The longevity of normal and varroa-infested Africanized honey bees, Apis mellifera L., was compared. The degree of infestation was determined by counting the adult and deutonymphal female mites present in the brood cell when the adult bee emerged. Uninfested control bees lived an average of 27.6 days; infested bees lived only 13.6.
