Nitrogen Losses, Trade‐Offs, and Mitigation Potential in Global Sugarcane Cropping Systems

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 7, July 2026.
Data compiled from global sugarcane experiments are used to derive region‐specific emission factors (EFs) for multiple nitrogen (N) loss pathways and to identify the key biophysical and management drivers of N losses, crop yield, and their trade‐offs.

Habitat Suitability for a Unique, Fully Marine American Manatee (Trichechus manatus) Population Primarily Depends on Presence of Submarine Freshwater Springs

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The American manatee (Trichechus manatus) requires freshwater mainly from rivers and springs to maintain osmoregulatory balance in saline environments. However, in Brazil's semi‐arid Potiguar Basin, manatees now rely solely on submarine freshwater springs because hypersaline estuaries have become unsuitable sources of freshwater.

Automated extraction of leaf mass per area from digitized herbarium specimens

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 2, Page 896-908, July 2026.
Summary The digitization of vast herbarium collections has made millions of plant specimen images freely available online, which can now be used to generate phenotypic datasets of unprecedented scope. Here, we assess the potential of computer vision tools to automate the extraction of predicted leaf mass per area (LMApred) from digitized herbarium ...

Effects of Elevated CO2 on Bean Pod Mottle Virus Infection in Both Incompatible and Compatible Interactions With Phaseolus vulgaris L

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 49, Issue 7, Page 4493-4512, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Plant viruses cause significant crop losses, a situation that could worsen due to anthropogenic activities driving global climate change, one factor of which is the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. This study assessed the impact of elevated CO2 concentration (eCO2, 1000 vs. 400 ppm) on two genotypes of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris
