Abstract In a patient with acute abdominal pain, the diagnosis of acute mesenteric vascular disease should be suspected immediately if there is a history of previous embolization, atrial fibrillation, or generalized atherosclerosis. Supportive therapy should be instituted promptly and should include treatment for congestive heart failure, hypotension,

The clinical presentation of mesenteric ischemia depends on the site, grade, and cause of vascular obstruction; the degree of collateralization; and the stage of disease. Patients in the early stages of ischemia typically have abdominal pain out of context with an unimpressive abdominal examination. It is during this stage that medical and endovascular

AbstractDiseases of the pulmonary vasculature are a cause of increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in pulmonary embolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), and pulmonary arterial hypertension or decreased PVR in pulmonary arteriovenous malformations on hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, portal hypertension, or ...

Mesenteric vascular disease continues to be associated with an extremely high mortality. It is not necessarily a disease of old age: 20 of the 75 patients in our series were less than 60 years of age. In retrospect, earlier diagnosis and a more aggressive approach could have improved the survival rate of 17.3 percent.

Strokes remain an important cause of mortality and morbidity despite recent advances in neurologic intensive care. Although support of ventilation and circulation improves the outcome for stroke patients, the efficacy of cerebral resuscitative measures such as hyperventilation, osmotherapy, fluid restriction, steroids, intracranial pressure control ...
