Vasectomy Failure and Open-Ended Vasectomy

The author of this letter comments on the earlier exchange of letters on vasectomy failure. In the present authors opinion vasectomy failures are most often caused by the inadequate creation of a barrier of fascia between the cut ends of the vas. The use of a magnifier makes it easier to spot and correct this error.

The No-Scalpel Vasectomy

A refined method of delivering the vas deferens for vasectomy has been developed and used in China since 1974. This method eliminates the scalpel, results in fewer hematomas and infections, and leaves a smaller wound than conventional techniques. An extracutaneous fixation ring clamp encircles and firmly secures the vas without penetrating the skin.

Results of 1241 vasectomies performed over the last 24 years are summarized. The method preferred in the last 1041 cases was section of the vas and removal of as much as possible usually 2 or 3 inches ligating the ends and allowing them to retract. Recanalization did not occur.
