Multimodal Physiotherapy Following Patellar Stabilization Surgery in Five Small‐Breed Dogs: A Case Series

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
Five small‐breed dogs undergoing surgery for medial patellar luxation received a structured 4‐week multimodal physiotherapy programme. Rehabilitation improved quadriceps muscle mass, stifle joint mobility, gait function and reduced lameness. Benefits were maintained at 1‐month follow‐up.

Muscle Changes in Critically Ill Children Following an Early Progressive Exercise in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Pre‐ and Post‐Intervention Study

open access: yesNursing in Critical Care, Volume 31, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Most critically ill children in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) are immobilised. Prolonged immobilisation in the PICU negatively affects children's physical health outcomes. Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an early progressive exercise (EPE) intervention to improve the PICU‐acquired muscle ...

Bed rest decreases resting skeletal muscle O2 uptake and resting energy expenditure in young and elderly subjects

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 5, Page 2599-2612, 1 May 2026.
Abstract A decrease in resting muscle O2 uptake (V̇O2m${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_2}{\mathrm{m}}}}$) described during bed rest (BR) could determine a decreased whole‐body resting energy expenditure (REE), potentially useful during prolonged spaceflights. Two groups of recreationally active men (young [Y], n = 8, age 23 ± 5 years; elderly [E], n = 10, age ...

Neuromuscular fatigue and loss of torque complexity during severe‐intensity exercise: The role of muscle size

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 5, Page 2588-2598, 1 May 2026.
Abstract This study investigated the effect of severe‐intensity exercise on neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) and torque complexity in two muscle groups of different sizes. The NMF of 11 healthy males was assessed through maximal voluntary contractions at the beginning, every minute and at task failure during intermittent isometric exercise performed at an ...

Skeletal muscle mitochondrial marker responses to a single bout and 6 weeks of high load versus high volume resistance training in previously trained men

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 5, Page 2564-2574, 1 May 2026.
Abstract The effects of high‐load (HL) versus high‐volume (HV) resistance training (RT) on various molecular outcomes are similar. However, mitochondrial responses remain understudied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to interrogate mitochondrial mRNA and protein responses to acute and chronic HL versus HV RT.
