Adsorption of phosphate on vaterite

Journal of the Chemical Society, Faraday Transactions, 1992
The adsorption of orthophosphate on the surface of vaterite has been investigated at 25.0 °C. The adsorption obeys the Henry adsorption isotherm at low phosphate concentrations and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm at high concentrations. The unprotonated phosphate ion is adsorbed on vaterite, forming a negatively charged ion pair with the ...

Vaterite formation during coal liquefaction

Chemical Geology, 1979
Abstract The vaterite form of calcium carbonate seldom occurs in geological formations or during chemical processing. However, vaterite crystals form during the liquefaction of a Wyoming subbituminous coal. Gravitational separation of the coal showed vaterite to form because of the presence of some other mineral in the coal matrix.

Bacterially mediated mineralization of vaterite

Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 2007
Myxococcus xanthus, a common soil bacterium, plays an active role in the formation of spheroidal vaterite. Bacterial production of CO2 and NH3 and the transformation of the NH3 to NH4+ and OH−, thus increasing solution pH and carbonate alkalinity, set the physicochemical conditions (high supersaturation) leading to vaterite precipitation in the ...

Struktur und Fehlordnung des Vaterits*

Zeitschrift für Kristallographie, 1969
Single-crystal photographs of vaterite (/1 CaC03) show numerous diffuse streaks II e* with maxima which require an increase in the previous lattice parameter a by a factor -y3 to 7.15 A, and doubling (sometimes trebling) of e to 16.94 A; moreover satellite reflections were observed.

The Multiple Structures of Vaterite

Crystal Growth & Design, 2013
For many years the nature of the disordered structure of vaterite, a calcium carbonate polymorph that plays a significant role in biomineralisation, has been debated. In the past year, two independent studies (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 51, 7041; CrystEngComm, 14, 44) have proposed new, yet different models on the basis of electron diffraction experiments

Vaterite Crystals Contain Two Interspersed Crystal Structures

Science, 2013
Double Vision Vaterite is the least stable form of anhydrous crystalline calcium carbonate. While rarely found in geological contexts, it is an important biological precursor and occurs as a minor component in the shells of some organisms.
