Two-stage vector quantization-lattice vector quantization
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1995Summary: A two-stage vector quantizer is introduced that uses an unstructured first-stage codebook and a second-stage lattice codebook. Joint optimum two-stage encoding is accomplished by exhaustive search of the parent codebook of the two-stage product code.

Audio coding of harmonic signals is a challenging task for conventional MDCT coding schemes. In this paper we introduce a novel algorithm for improved transform coding of harmonic audio. The algorithm does not deploy the conventional scheme of splitting the input signal into a spectrum envelope and a residual, but models the spectral peak regions.

Vector quantization (VQ) is a very effective way to save bandwidth and storage for speech coding and image coding. Traditional vector quantization methods can be divided into mainly seven types, tree-structured VQ, direct sum VQ, Cartesian product VQ, lattice VQ, classified VQ, feedback VQ, and fuzzy VQ, according to their codebook generation ...

Predictive vector quantization
ICASSP '84. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005A proposed class of vector quantizers with memory, called Predictive Vector Quantizers (PVQ), exhibits good performance (as measured by mean-squared error distortion) for the encoding of speech signals at 16 kbits/sec. Two methods for designing PVQ's are described, and their performance is compared to that of memoryless VQ's by computer simulation ...

Vector quantization-lattice vector quantization of speech LPC coefficients
Proceedings of ICASSP '94. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, 2002Two-stage vector quantization-lattice vector quantization (VQ-LVQ) is used to encode the speech line spectrum pair (LSP) parameters. VQ-LVQ has the advantages of lower implementational complexity and less required memory than split vector quantization (SVQ) and multi-stage vector quantization (MSVQ) with unstructured codebooks.

Soft Learning Vector Quantization
Neural Computation, 2003Learning vector quantization (LVQ) is a popular class of adaptive nearest prototype classifiers for multiclass classification, but learning algorithms from this family have so far been proposed on heuristic grounds. Here, we take a more principled approach and derive two variants of LVQ using a gaussian mixture ansatz. We propose an objective function

Interframe hierarchical vector quantization
International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1989An interframe hierarchical vector quantizer (IHVQ) is presented that is capable of encoding image sequence scenes at rates below 0.3 bit per pixel per frame. A regular decomposition quadtree method is used to segment the interframe differential signal into homogeneous regions of different block size.

On the structure of vector quantizers
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1982Vector quantization is intrinsically superior to predictive coding, transform coding, and other suboptimal and {\em ad hoc} procedures since it achieves optimal rate distortion performance subject only to a constraint on memory or block length of the observable signal segment being encoded.

Predictive residual vector quantization
Proceedings of the 12th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition (Cat. No.94CH3440-5), 2002This paper presents a new vector quantization technique, called predictive residual vector quantization (PRVQ), which combines the concepts of predictive vector quantization (PVQ) and residual vector quantization (RVQ) to implement a high performance VQ scheme with low search complexity.
