Applying multiple testing procedures to detect change in East African vegetation

open access: yes, 2014
The study of vegetation fluctuations gives valuable information toward effective land use and development. We consider this problem for the East African region based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) series from satellite remote ...

On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.

Nutrient dynamics of decomposing litter and their effects on subsequent mass loss and nutrient release in a subtropical forest

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Leaf litter decomposition is a key ecological process that strongly regulates carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling in forests. While the effects of climate and initial litter nutrient chemistry on mass loss are well established, the dynamics of ...

BLADE‐ON‐PETIOLE Genes Enable Genetic Bottleneck Mitigation Through Cross‐Species Repurposing of Floral Persistence Traits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that BLADE‐ON‐PETIOLE (BOP) proteins regulate floral abscission and senescence in tomato by interacting with TFAM1 to form transcriptional condensates controlling the ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA HOMEOBOX GENE 1 (ATH1)‐mediated abscission pathway.

A synthesis of soil carbon and nitrogen recovery after wetland restoration and creation in the United States

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Wetland restoration and creation efforts have been widely attempted as a way to compensate for wetland losses and to recover wetland functions; however, to date, there has been no comprehensive evaluation of the efficacy of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen ...

Coupled Above‐ and Belowground Ecosystem Stability Worldwide

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Are the worlds above and below our feet in sync? This global exploration reveals an entangled fate between above‐ and belowground ecosystem stability. It identifies arid regions as hotspots for this coupling and highlights temperature stability as a vital safeguard for maintaining ecosystem balance across our warming planet.

Bifidobacterium Pseudolongum‐Derived Acetate Attenuates Acute Pancreatitis Through GPR43‐Mediated Suppression of M1 Macrophage Polarization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) is linked to reduced abundance of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum (B. pseudolongum). Administration of B. pseudolongum or its key metabolite acetate alleviates pancreatic and systemic inflammation by suppressing M1 macrophage polarization.
