Palm phytoliths of mid-elevation Andean forests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Palms are one of the most common tropical plant groups. They are widespread across lowland tropical forests, but many are found in higher altitudes have more constrained environmental ranges.

Inulin‐Based Oral Chemotherapy Modulates Gut Microbiota and Immune Microenvironment through Inhibition of Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation for Improving Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of ZIF‐8@OXA@inulin for cancer immunotherapy. Synthesis of ZIF‐8@OXA@inulin. Augmentation of pyroptosis, regulation of gut microbiota, and inhibition of NETs formation by ZIF‐8@OXA@inulin‐mediated comprehensive strategy for antitumor immune response. ABSTRACT Despite the potential of chemoimmunotherapy against colorectal cancer

Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen help to predict the belowground communities at a regional scale

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
At the regional scale, although environmental factors are known to shape the distributions of belowground communities in terrestrial ecosystems, these environmental factors account for relatively low percentages of the variation in belowground ...

Modelling the Evolution of Barrier Islands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Barrier islands form off the shore of many coastal areas and serve as the first line of defense, protecting littoral communities against storms. To study the effects that climate change has on barrier islands, we use a cellular model of wind erosion ...

Vegetation response to extreme climate events on the Mongolian Plateau from 2000 to 2010 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Climate change has led to more frequent extreme winters (aka, dzud) and summer droughts on the Mongolian Plateau during the last decade. Among these events, the 2000–2002 combined summer drought–dzud and 2010 dzud were the most severe on vegetation.

On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.
