Relationships between percent vegetation cover and vegetation indices
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1998In this paper, percent vegetation cover is estimated from vegetation indices using simulated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data derived from in situ spectral reflectance data. Spectral reflectance measurements were conducted on grasslands in Mongolia and Japan.

MODIS Vegetative Cover Conversion and Vegetation Continuous Fields
2010Land cover change occurs at various spatial and temporal scales. For example, large-scale mechanical removal of forests for agro-industrial activities contrasts with the small-scale clearing of subsistence farmers. Such dynamics vary in spatial extent and rate of land conversion.

Vegetation Cover of Porphyry Outcrops
1996The plant cover of the porphyry landscape northwest of Halle forms a mosaic of strongly contrasting vegetation units. These are characterized by a high species diversity and the presence of a high number of species rare for this region. Reasons for the high species number and diversity are site dependant changes in edaphic and microclimatic factors ...

Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important parameter in the study of ecosystem balance, soil erosion, and climate change and is often used to evaluate and monitor vegetation degradation and desertification. Remote sensing provides the only feasible way to estimate FVC at regional and global scales. In the present study, an empirical model of FVC

The reliability of vegetation indices for monitoring saltmarsh vegetation cover
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1997The dynamic nature of saltmarshes poses a challenge for coastal zone monitoring; natural variability in the sediment reflectance and atmospheric visibility within saltmarsh environment affects the reliability of regression relations between vegetation cover and vegetation indices.

2003
The plant cover of the Nizhne-Koshelevsky hydrothermal field area (Southern Kamchatka) was studied 20 years after being damaged by prospecting and exploratory drilling. Siberian dwarf-pine and dwarf-alder elfin woods were replaced by secondary herb- and grass communities.

Full polarimetric emissivity of vegetation-covered soils: vegetation structure effects
IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2003In May 1999 the SMOS Earth Explorer Opportunity mission was selected by ESA to provide global soil moisture and sea salinity maps using the MIRAS L-band aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer. At this frequency there is a high dynamic range of the soil moisture signature and surface roughness effects are small, as well as vegetation effects ...

Importance of vegetation type in forest cover estimation
2012 Conference on Intelligent Data Understanding, 2012Forests are an important natural resource that play a major role in sustaining a number of vital geochemical and bioclimatic processes. Since damage to forests due to natural and anthropogenic factors can have long-lasting impacts on the health of the planet, monitoring and estimating forest cover and its losses at global, regional and local scales is ...
