The succession on Velebit Mt. provides evidence of shallow-marine deposition with several periods of emergence from the Late Carboniferous (Moscovian) to the Oligocene, when the dominant uplift phase took place. Quaternary deposits in highlands and valleys tell the story of the more recent geological history, including the Pleistocene glaciation.

Middle Permian reef complex on the Velebit Mt.
1999The superimposed carbonate bodies are interpreted as ecological and morphological reef complex, based on their characteristic fossil association, body geometry and characteristic internal organisation. Sea level changes reflected themselves in aborting and resuming the reef growth.

Geology of the central Velebit Mt.
2004Velebit se u geološkom smislu, kao dio krških Dinarida i Jadranske karbonatne platforme, sastoji od sedimenata vrlo velikog raspona starosti: od karbona (oko 320 milijuna godina) pa do oligocena (oko 24 milujuna godina), ukupne debljine od gotovo 10.000 m.
