Pulse Dispersion and Pulse Velocity

1996
Any physically consistent setting up of a pulse problem should incorporate three basic components: a source of the perturbation, a medium of propagation and a receiver spatially separated from the source. To obtain a reproducible experiment one should eliminate all other sources of perturbations, and initiate the signal in the medium at rest at a ...

Group-velocity-dispersion-compensated propagation of short pulses in dispersive media

Optics Letters, 1996
An optical scheme based on a single angularly dispersive element is proposed for canceling group-velocity dispersion for pulse propagation in dispersive media. It is demonstrated experimentally that a pulse duration of 100 fs is preserved throughout the travel of a 248-nm-pulse through a 75-mm-long fused-silica slab.

Dispersion by random velocity fields

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1975
A simple approximation is proposed for the problem of the dispersion of marked particles in an incompressible fluid in random motion when the probability distribution of the velocity field is taken as Gaussian, homogeneous, isotropic, stationary and of zero mean.

On the Local Velocity Dispersions

1992
A new formula for the ratio of the planar velocity dispersions containing an asymmetric-drift term is proposed. It yields a good agreement with the flat rotation curve of the Galaxy.

Velocity dispersion in water-saturated granular sediment

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2000
Recent experiments in the Gulf of Mexico have yielded a wealth of information on the environmental conditions and geoacoustic response of a uniform sand stratum immediately beneath the seafloor. A comparison of p-wave velocities measured at low (125 Hz) and high (11–50 kHz) frequencies in this layer indicates that there is a significant amount of ...
