A distributed, dynamic, parallel computational model: the role of noise in velocity storage

open access: yesJournal of Neurophysiology, 2012
Networks of neurons perform complex calculations using distributed, parallel computation, including dynamic “real-time” calculations required for motion control. The brain must combine sensory signals to estimate the motion of body parts using imperfect information from noisy neurons.

Flow field in a reservoir subject to pumped-storage operation - in situ measurement and numerical modeling [PDF]

open access: yes
In pumped-storage reservoirs, turbulent kinetic energy input from plant operation can be considerably high. Flow velocities were measured by Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers near the intake/outlet structure to describe flow patterns induced by pumped ...

Feasibility of Crosshole Seismic Tomography for Monitoring In Situ CO2 Mineral Storage in Basalts: A Rock Physics‐ and Seismic Modeling Study

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
In situ CO2 mineral storage is gaining increasing attention as a carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions. So far, in situ CO2 mineral storage projects have been monitored predominantly using fluid‐ and isotope ...

Obesity Subtypes and Longitudinal Trajectories of Function Over Seven Years of Follow‐Up: Data From the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Obesity, defined by body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2, is a risk factor for functional limitations in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, function varies among such individuals. Our objective was to evaluate the implications of obesity subtypes on longitudinal patterns of physical functioning in people with or at risk for knee OA ...

On the Lightweight Potential of Laser Additive Manufactured NiTi Triply Periodic Minimal Sheet Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the lightweight potential of laser additive‐manufactured NiTi triply periodic minimal surface sheet lattices. It systematically investigates the effects of relative density and unit cell size on surface quality, deformation recovery, compression behavior, and energy absorption.

Velocity Storage Contribution to Vestibular Self-Motion Perception in Healthy Human Subjects

open access: yesJournal of Neurophysiology, 2011
Self-motion perception after a sudden stop from a sustained rotation in darkness lasts approximately as long as reflexive eye movements. We hypothesized that, after an angular velocity step, self-motion perception and reflexive eye movements are driven by the same vestibular pathways.

Electrochemical Evaluation of Compressed Selective Laser Melted AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg Alloys in Chloride Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The corrosion performance of AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg alloys produced through selective laser melting (SLM) was examined under compressive stress in a chloride environment. Electrochemical analyses, including open‐circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were complemented by scanning ...

Innovative Processing of Compacted Waste Aluminum Alloy Powders via Controlled Remelting and Solidification

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an efficient recycling route for out‐of‐spec AlSi10Mg atomized powders through compaction and arc remelting followed by suction casting. By correlating compaction load, cooling rate, and resulting microstructure, we show that intermediate pressures (50–80 kN) and rapid cooling refine dendrites, reduce porosity, and enhance ...
