Malignant Arrhythmia and Cardiac Arrest Following Intentional Yew Tree Leaf Ingestion Salvaged by VA‐ECMO

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT This case emphasizes the role of multidisciplinary involvement and early decision‐making in yew tree (Taxus baccata) poisoning. Taxus baccata contains taxine alkaloids that predispose to malignant arrhythmia. Here, we present a case of Taxus baccata toxicity presenting with refractory cardiac arrest, salvaged ultimately by VA‐ECMO.

SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF A RECIPIENT WITH MASSIVE THROMBOSIS OF HEART TRANSPLANT LEFT CHAMBERS DURING EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION

open access: yesВестник трансплантологии и искусственных органов, 2016
We present a case report of a 16-year-old man with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) for primary graft failure after orthotopic heart transplantation who developed left atrium and left ventricular thrombosis despite systemic ...

Prevalence of a delayed diagnosis of caffeine poisoning in the emergency department of a Japanese hospital

open access: yesJournal of General and Family Medicine, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 157-162, March 2025.
The initial diagnosis is missed in 1 of every 10 patients with acute caffeine poisoning. The presence of seizure as the initial sign is associated with delayed diagnosis of acute caffeine poisoning. Abstract Background Most cases of acute caffeine poisoning are easily diagnosed at initial hospital visits.

Successful management of severe liver failure on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation using molecular adsorbent recirculating systeme. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A 49-year-old female with Adriamycin induced cardiomyopathy presented with decompensated biventricular congestive heart failure. Despite multiple Inotropes, the patient’s hemodynamics deteriorated and she underwent veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane ...

Jesaconitine monitoring in a case of severe aconitum poisoning with torsade de pointes treated via extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

open access: yesAcute Medicine &Surgery, Volume 12, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
A male in his 20s with suicidal aconite root ingestion developed refractory TdP, requiring ECMO. His arrhythmia resolved as jesaconitine levels decreased below 1 ng/mL. This case highlights the correlation between jesaconitine concentration and clinical symptoms, suggesting its potential use in guiding treatment for severe Aconitum poisoning.

Use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation–Facilitated Large-Bore Catheter Embolectomy in the Treatment of Acute Pulmonary Embolism Complicated by Shock [PDF]

open access: yesTexas Heart Institute Journal
This article reports the case of a 42-year-old man who presented with a saddle pulmonary embolus complicated by normotensive cardiogenic shock. The patient was first stabilized with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for respiratory failure: A narrative review [PDF]

open access: yes
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for respiratory failure in the intensive care unit continues to have an expanded role in select patients. While acute respiratory distress syndrome remains the most common indication, extracorporeal membrane ...

Management considerations of massive hemoptysis while on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
BACKGROUND: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) is a life-saving procedure in patients with both respiratory and cardiac failure. Bleeding complications are common since patients must be maintained on anticoagulation.
