Performance Comparison of Bow and Stern Rudder for High‐Speed Supercavitating Vehicles

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
To predict the hydrodynamic characteristics and supercavity shape of supercavitation flows, the numerical model including VOF, cavitation model, and turbulence models is presented and validated by a well‐established empirical correlation. The numerical method is then employed to simulate the high‐speed supercavitating vehicles with two different types ...

Design Methodology of Conical Section Shape for Supercavitating Vehicles considering Auto‐Oscillation Characteristics

open access: yesComplexity, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
Due to the complexity of the cavity/vehicle and oscillation characteristics, streamlined shape integrated design of conventional fully wetted vehicles is not suitable for supercavitating vehicles. In this paper, a set of design criteria is highlighted to optimize the length and streamlined shape of a conical section subjected to realistic design ...

Spatial Kinetics Model of Supercavitating Vehicles Reflecting Conic‐Like Oscillation

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
A spatial kinetics model for supercavitating vehicles including the coupled motion of pitch, yaw, and rolling was presented. Mathematical simulations were performed to investigate dynamic performance of supercavitating vehicles. An intrinsic conic‐like oscillation in the motion of supercavitating vehicles was discovered.

Investigation of Boundary Effects on the Natural Cavitating Flow around a 2D Wedge in Shallow Water

open access: yesModelling and Simulation in Engineering, Volume 2011, Issue 1, 2011., 2011
When a cavitated body moves in shallow water, both flexible free surface and rigid bottom wall will produce great influence on the cavity pattern and hydrodynamics to change the motion attitude and stability of the body. In this paper, a single‐fluid multiphase flow method coupled with a natural cavitation model was employed to study the effects of two

Numerical Study of the Behaviors of Ventilated Supercavities in a Periodic Gust Flow [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fluids Engineering, 2020
Abstract We conducted a numerical simulation of ventilated supercavitation from a forward-facing cavitator in unsteady flows generated by a gust generator under different gust angles of attack and gust frequencies. The numerical method is validated through the experimental results under specific steady and unsteady conditions.

Control experiments with a semi-axisymmetric supercavity and a supercavity-piercing fin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Supercavitation can significantly reduce skin-friction drag on an underwater body, thus enabling a dramatic increase in attainable velocity. The control of a High-Speed Supercavitating Vehicle (HSSV) poses unique challenges, since only small regions at ...
