Ventricular assist device implantation in the elderly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: Dramatic advances in ventricular assist device (VAD) design and patient management have made mechanical circulatory support an attractive therapeutic option for the growing pool of elderly heart failure patients.

Cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation for patients with ventricular assist device From exercise therapy to long-term therapy Part I: exercise therapy

open access: yesMonaldi Archives for Chest Disease, 2015
In the present context of an aging population, limited donor heart availability, improved reliability of mechanical cardiac support and improved patient outcomes, ventricular assist device (VAD) options to support end-stage heart failure patients are ...

Multi-scale simulation of thrombus formation at LVAD inlet cannula connection: Importance of Virchow's triad [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
As pump thrombosis is reduced in current-generation ventricular assist devices (VAD), adverse events such as bleeding or stroke remain at unacceptable rates. Thrombosis around the VAD inlet cannula (IC) has been highlighted as a possible source of stroke events.

An Anticoagulant Coating Based on a Block Phosphocholine Copolymer for Potential Applications in Blood Contact Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Anticoagulant properties are critical for blood‐compatible materials, and anticoagulant coatings are a common key issue for blood‐contacting medical devices. In this study, a block copolymer poly(2‐methacrylenoxyethyl phosphocholine‐b‐glycidyl) (PMPC‐b‐GMA) is synthesized, using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and

Relationship between device acceptance and patient-reported outcomes in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The number of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) implanted each year is rising. Nevertheless, there are minimal data on device acceptance after LVAD implant, and on its relationship with patient-reported outcomes. We designed a cross-sectional study

In Vitro and In Silico Characterization of the Aggregation of Thrombi on Ventricular Assist Device Cannula [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The unacceptably high stroke rate of HeartMate III VAD without signs of adherent pump thrombosis is hypothesized to be the result of the thrombi originating on the inflow cannula, ingesting and ejecting emboli from the VAD. Therefore, inflow cannula thrombosis has been an emerging focus.

Ventricular Assist Devices [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2009
The need for mechanical assistance of the failing heart, whether acute after a myocardial infarction or permanent in patients with end-stage heart failure, has increased with improvements in medical therapy and a growing aged population. Over the past few decades, much progress has been made in the development and refinement of ventricular assist ...

Neural Plasticity and Hearing‐Speech Development in Children with Auditory Brainstem Implants for Congenital Hearing Loss Due to Severe Inner Ear Malformation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Data from a prospective cohort with 112 auditory brainstem implant users are analyzed. Younger age at implantation (<3 years), less severe inner‐ear malformation (common cavity, cochlear aplasia, and hypoplasia), and more intraoperative eABR evoked electrodes (≥60%) are associated with better hearing and speech outcomes.

Ventricular assist device for advanced heart failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Heart failure (HF) continues to be a highly prevalent disease, affecting 1–2% of the population in developed countries, therefore constitutes a health problem due to its high cost. Despite the progress made in drug treatment and implantation devices, the
