The tacrolimus concentration‐to‐dose ratio is associated with kidney function in heart transplant recipients

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Aim Heart transplantation (HT) is frequently complicated by chronic kidney disease, of which tacrolimus‐related nephrotoxicity is an important cause. In kidney and liver transplant recipients, fast tacrolimus metabolism (defined as a low concentration‐to‐dose [C0/D] ratio), negatively affects kidney function.

Deciphering the skeletal interoceptive circuitry to control bone homeostasis

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
This review introduces the skeletal interoceptive circuitry, covering the ascending signals from bone tissues to the brain (sensors), the central neural circuits that integrate this information and dispatch commands (CPU), and the descending pathways that regulate bone homeostasis (effectors).

Value of nutritional indices in predicting survival free from pump replacement and driveline infections in centrifugal left ventricular assist devicesCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Open
Objective: There is a paucity of data assessing the impact of nutritional status on outcomes in patients supported with the HeartMate 3 (HM3) left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

Incorporating Clinical Examination Skills Into a Preclinical Anatomy Course: A Method for Facilitating Engagement and Interest

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Anatomy instruction is enhanced when students are engaged and interested in course material, and the relevance of the subject matter to their academic success and professional careers is emphasized. We developed a learning activity for a pre‐clinical anatomy course using the clinical skills of inspection and palpation of a cadaver donor to ...

Clinical implications of left atrial changes after optimization of medical therapy in patients with heart failure

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Heart Failure, Volume 24, Issue 11, Page 2131-2139, November 2022., 2022
Among patients with new‐onset or worsening heart failure (HF) undergoing optimization of HF medical therapy, dose up‐titration of angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker (ACEi/ARB) therapy was associated with lower likelihood of left atrial adverse remodelling (LAAR).

Use of guideline‐recommended medical therapy in patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease: from physician's prescriptions to patient's dispensations, medication adherence and persistence

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Heart Failure, Volume 24, Issue 11, Page 2185-2195, November 2022., 2022
Patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease are less likely to receive and persist on guideline‐recommended medical therapies. Aim Half of heart failure (HF) patients have chronic kidney disease (CKD) complicating their pharmacological management.

Predicting Bleeding and Thrombosis Complications in Patients with Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy has been proven to relieve heart failure symptoms and improve survival, but is not devoid of bleeding and/or thrombotic complications.
