Right ventricular dysfunction in children supported with pulsatile ventricular assist devices [PDF]
ObjectivesTo describe the incidence and severity of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in pediatric ventricular assist device (VAD) recipients and to identify the preoperative characteristics associated with RVD and their effect on outcomes ...

Data from a prospective cohort with 112 auditory brainstem implant users are analyzed. Younger age at implantation (<3 years), less severe inner‐ear malformation (common cavity, cochlear aplasia, and hypoplasia), and more intraoperative eABR evoked electrodes (≥60%) are associated with better hearing and speech outcomes.

Hemodynamic effects of partial ventricular support in chronic heart failure: Results of simulation validated with in vivo data [PDF]
ObjectiveCurrent left ventricular assist devices are designed to provide full hemodynamic support for patients with end-stage failing hearts, but their use has been limited by operative risks, low reliability, and device-related morbidity.

Injectable pH responsive conductive hydrogel for intelligent delivery of metformin and exosomes to alleviate myocardial ischemia‐reperfusion injury. The hydrogel responds to the weakly acidic microenvironment of ischemic injury and can significantly reduce the production of intracellular ROS and enhance cardiac conduction, thereby resisting apoptosis ...

Ventricular assist devices for all? [PDF]
In the past 5 years, the numbers of ventricular assist device (VAD) systems implanted worldwide have increased exponentially. Thus, since the introduction of the HeartMate II LVAD by Thoratec (Thoratec Inc., Pleasanton, CA, USA) over 10 000 of these pumps have been implanted.

A Physiological Control System for an Implantable Heart Pump that Accommodates for Interpatient and Intrapatient Variations [PDF]
Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) can provide mechanical support for a failing heart as bridge to transplant and destination therapy. Physiological control systems for LVADs should be designed to respond to changes in hemodynamic across a variety of clinical scenarios and patients by automatically adjusting the heart pump speed.

Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent kinase II (CaMKII) activation is likely driven by oxidative stress, particularly excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. This study identifies P21‐activated kinase 2 (Pak2) as a novel regulator of ROS‐induced CaMKII activation and abnormal Ca2⁺ dynamics in acute adrenergic and chronic pressure‐overload stressed ...

Numerical Optimal Control of Turbo Dynamic Ventricular Assist Devices
The current paper presents a methodology for the derivation of optimal operating strategies for turbo dynamic ventricular assist devices (tVADs). In current clinical practice, tVADs are typically operated at a constant rotational speed, resulting in a ...
