Understanding Left Ventricular Function
1988The characteristics of cardiac muscle contraction and relaxation have been extensively investigated using isolated heart muscle preparations. In such preparations, the effects of changes in preload (Starling’s law of the heart) and in contractility have been clearly defined, and many indices of contractility described.

Left Ventricular Systolic Function
2016The estimation of left ventricular systolic function, both qualitative and quantitative, remains essential to the perioperative management of the cardiovascular status of the surgical patient. As a result of its portability and versatility, echocardiography is now widely used for this purpose (Lang et al. in European Journal of Echocardiography 7(2):79–

Evaluation of left ventricular function
1989Until recently, the echocardiography evaluation of left ventricular volume and systolic function has been performed by M-mode derived left ventricular end-diastolic and systolic dimension measurements. M-mode echocardiography more clearly identifies the endocardial surface of the left ventricle as compared with two-dimensional echocardiography.

Left Ventricular Pump Function
1997The heart is a cleverly designed organ that propells blood around the body. Satisfactory performance depends on competent cardiac valves and powerful contraction of cardiac muscle. The heart’s performance is often compared to that of a hydraulic pump where efficiency is computed as the ratio of work performed to oxygen consumed.
