Atrial Septal Defect and Ventricular Septal Defect
2017Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the general name for a number of diseases which their etiology is mainly a congenital defect in the interatrial septum. ASD, after bicuspid aortic valve and mitral valve prolapse, is the third most common congenital heart disease; also, it is much more frequent in women than men (McCarthy et al. 2003; Geva et al. 2014).

Atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect.
Seminars in veterinary medicine and surgery (small animal), 1995In summary, ASD and VSD sometimes do not require surgical intervention and have a good-to-excellent prognosis in animal patients in which surgical intervention is necessary. Animal patients with these diseases often do not show symptoms, but those that do and cannot be adequately managed medically are challenging but rewarding cardiac surgical cases.
