Venture Capital and Capital Gains Taxation [PDF]

open access: yesTax Policy and the Economy, 1989
This paper investigates the links between capital gains taxation and the level of venture capital activity. I examine two explanations of how reducing the personal capital gains tax rate may spur venture capital: the first focuses on the supply of funds to the venture industry, and the second on the supply of entrepreneurs.

Topology‐Orchestrated Multi‐physical Energy Control in Turtle Shell‐Inspired Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A turtle shell‐inspired lattice metamaterial efficiently manages acoustic, fluid‐thermal, and mechanical energy flows simultaneously. The unique hybrid‐coupling architecture achieves superior sound attenuation via pore‐cavity resonance, facilitates effective airflow transport, and maximizes mechanical energy absorption through multistage cell ...

Bank versus Venture Capital [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2001
Why do some start-up firms raise funds from banks and others from venture capitalists? To answer this question, I develop a model of start-up financing when intellectual property rights are not well protected. The upside of VC financing is that the VC understands the business better than a bank.

Long‐Term Ambient Benzene Exposure and Brain Disorders Among Urban Adults: Effect Modification by Genetic Susceptibility and Potential Mediation by Plasma Proteins

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Low‐level ambient benzene exposure is associated with increased risks of multiple brain disorders in urban adults. Genetic susceptibility modifies these associations, while plasma proteomics points to potential biological pathways linking benzene exposure to adverse brain health.

Ti‐Doping Activates Adjacent Zr Sites in Bimetallic MOFs for Cooperative Phospholipid Removals in Human Biomonitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ti‐doped Zr/Ti bimetallic MOFs activate neighboring Zr sites to selectively capture phospholipids from serum through cooperative interactions. In nontargeted screening, the material minimizes matrix interference, expands detectable feature coverage, and enables broad recovery of diverse chemical hazards, providing a powerful cleanup strategy for LC ...

UCtracker: A Deep Learning–Based DNA Methylation Model for Noninvasive Diagnosis and Recurrence Surveillance of Urothelial Carcinoma in a Prospective Study

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We developed UCtracker, a urine DNA methylation–based deep learning model, for noninvasive diagnosis and postoperative surveillance of urothelial carcinoma. UCtracker demonstrates high diagnostic accuracy, robustness at ultralow sequencing depth, early recurrence detection, and dynamic risk‐stratified monitoring of molecular residual disease ...
