AbstractThis book deals with the use and development of ‘periphrastic’ constructions in Ancient Greek (VIII bc–VIII ad), focusing on constructions with the verbs ‘to be’ (εἰμί) and ‘to have’ (ἔχω), as in ἦν διδάσκων ‘he was teaching’ or ἔχω θαυμάσας ‘I have wondered’.

The paper explores the definition and typology of periphrastic expressions in both Russian and Romance languages, taking into consideration a range of linguistic criteria. Given its multidimensional nature, periphrasis cannot be specified in terms of subject, resulting in ambiguity in its designation.
