The Verbenaceae is a large family with up to 98 genera and about 2600 species. These are distributed worldwide, but with a concentration in tropical and subtropical regions. Only one genus occurs in Western Europe, Verbena officinalis.

Kew Bulletin, 2021The lectotypification of the Linnaean name Verbena orubica L. is discussed. Based on thorough study of original material and pertinent literature, a critical review is provided and a lectotype is designated upon a specimen from the Clifford herbarium. This material preserves the current application of the name to a species of Stachytarpheta Vahl.
