Forest Degradation and Weather Jointly Affect Early‐Life Development in a Tropical Understory Bird

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 3, March 2026.
More than a decade of field data from Kenya's Taita Hills show that forest degradation and warming jointly shape nestling development in a tropical forest bird. Nestlings in small or degraded forest patches had poorer condition, especially during low rainfall, while intact high‐canopy forests buffered them against drought and heat. Wings and tarsi were

Evolution of the Resin Daisies: Biogeography of the Genus Pteronia L. (Astereae, Asteraceae) in the Arid and Semi‐Arid Habitats of Southern Africa

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The species‐rich flora of southern Africa results from Neogene species accumulation involving multiple geographically distinct radiations. This diversity was enhanced by lineage cross‐seeding amongst several broadly defined regional floras.

Reductive activation of potential antitumor bis(aziridinyl)benzoquinones by xanthine oxidase: Competition between oxygen reduction and quinone reduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The reduction of a series of 2,5-bis(1-aziridinyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (BABQ) derivatives with various 3,6 substituents by the enzyme xanthine oxidase has been studied.

Mortality limits used in wind energy impact assessment underestimate impacts of wind farms on bird populations

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
The consequences of bird mortality caused by collisions with wind turbines are increasingly receiving attention. So‐called acceptable mortality limits of populations, that is, those that assume that 1%–5% of additional mortality and the potential ...

Characterization of Mitochondrial Genomes and Evolutionary Relationships in Two Moenkhausia (Characiformes: Acestrorhamphidae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study successfully decoded the complete mitochondrial genomes of two Moenkhausia species, with total lengths of 16,439 and 16,461 bp, respectively. This study enhances genomic resources for Acestrorhamphidae and provides a foundation for investigating evolutionary mechanisms and developing molecular markers.

Advancing Mediterranean Biodiversity Monitoring in South Africa Through Machine Learning and Cost‐Effective UAS Imagery

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) of South Africa is globally recognized for its exceptional plant diversity and endemism, yet faces mounting threats from habitat loss, altered fire regimes, and invasive species. Fire is a key ecological driver in the Fynbos (shrubland) biome of the GCFR, influencing vegetation structure, composition ...
