Quality Assessment of an Integrated Care Pathway Using Telemonitoring in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Study

open access: yesJMIR Research Protocols, 2020
BackgroundChronic heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often coexist and are associated with a high morbidity and reduced quality of life (QoL).

Industrial engineering in Spain, the challenge of a new liberal profession in the nineteenth century [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Industrial engineering was established in Spain in 1850. Despite the initial difficulties, the profession found its role in the process of the industrialization of Spain.

Advancing Mediterranean Biodiversity Monitoring in South Africa Through Machine Learning and Cost‐Effective UAS Imagery

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) of South Africa is globally recognized for its exceptional plant diversity and endemism, yet faces mounting threats from habitat loss, altered fire regimes, and invasive species. Fire is a key ecological driver in the Fynbos (shrubland) biome of the GCFR, influencing vegetation structure, composition ...

Mortality limits used in wind energy impact assessment underestimate impacts of wind farms on bird populations

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
The consequences of bird mortality caused by collisions with wind turbines are increasingly receiving attention. So‐called acceptable mortality limits of populations, that is, those that assume that 1%–5% of additional mortality and the potential ...

Phylogenetic Endemism and Ancestral Area Inference Reveal Historical Refugia in the Greater Cape Floristic Region

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Refugial areas and habitats are thought to have played a key role in facilitating both the emergence and persistence of floristic diversity in the Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) of South Africa. While refugial areas may be identified using a diversity of biological proxies (e.g., narrow‐range endemism; paleoendemism), there is a ...

Using GPS telemetry to validate least-cost modeling of gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis) movement within a fragmented landscape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In Britain, the population of native red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris has suffered population declines and local extinctions. Interspecific resource competition and disease spread by the invasive gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis are the main factors ...

Genetic and morphological analyses support the reinstatement of Schoenus vacillans (Cyperaceae) as distinct from S. apogon

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 63, Issue 5, Page 2650-2665, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Schoenus vacillans is a sedge described from New Zealand in 1878 by Thomas Kirk. However, for over one hundred years, S. vacillans has been considered a synonym of the morphologically‐variable S. apogon, which occurs in New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, New Guinea and possibly Japan. Here we investigate the taxonomic status of S.

OTULIN protects the intestinal epithelium from apoptosis during inflammation and infection

open access: yesCell Death and Disease, 2023
The intestinal epithelium is a single cell layer that is constantly renewed and acts as a physical barrier that separates intestinal microbiota from underlying tissues.

Managing hedgerows for biodiversity: Disentangling the effects of trimming, structure and connectivity on the use of linear features by bats

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 12, Page 3300-3313, December 2025.
Our findings underscore the value of extensive hedgerow management in promoting on‐farm bat activity and support the integration of simple hedgerow quality assessment protocols into agri‐environment schemes. Consistent with previous research, we confirm the importance of tall, tree‐filled hedgerows and emphasise the need to preserve mature trees.
