Beyond the uncanny: Shirley Jackson’s poetics of alienation
Orbis Litterarum, Volume 77, Issue 4, Page 217-237, August 2022., 2022 Abstract Shirley Jackson is one of the most important authors of the uncanny of the twentieth century. Forgotten after her death in 1965, she is currently being rediscovered. This paper attributes her mastery to the depiction and evocation of extreme mental states, especially alienation and estrangement from oneself.
