Coronally cleft vertebra

One hundred and twenty-five cases of coronally cleft vertebrae are reviewed with reference to the sex incidence and the level of the affected vertebrae. Cleft vertebrae were seen once in every 150 antenatal radiographic examinations. Eighty four per cent of affected vertebrae were lumbar. A male-female ratio of 3:1 was found.

The differential diagnostic problems of a case of vertebra plana Calvé having a rare location in the cervical spine are discussed. The various theories of aetiology and pathogenesis are considered briefly. The differentiation from inflammatory and tumourous diseases of the vertebral column is of great importance for therapeutic reasons.

Summary Coronal cleft vertebr˦ found in 15 living infants and 13 stillborn fœtuses, or infants dying in the neonatal period, are described. Antenatal diagnosis was possible in 16 instances and in 11 cases the progress of ossification was observed radiologically. The condition results from the persistence of anterior and posterior ossification centres
