Vertebral body segmentation with GrowCut: Initial experience, workflow and practical application [PDF]

open access: yesSAGE Open Medicine, Volume 5, pp. 1-10, Nov. 2017, 2017
In this contribution, we used the GrowCut segmentation algorithm publicly available in three-dimensional Slicer for three-dimensional segmentation of vertebral bodies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the GrowCut method has been studied for the usage of vertebral body segmentation.

The primitive metazoan Hydra expresses antistasin, a serine protease inhibitor of vertebrate blood coagulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
We have isolated and characterized cDNAs from Hydra which encode antistasin, a potent inhibitor of factor Xa in the vertebrate blood clotting cascade. Hydra antistasin is expressed in gland cells and represents a major class of transcripts from Hydra's ...

Cellular Automata Segmentation of the Boundary between the Compacta of Vertebral Bodies and Surrounding Structures [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Medical Imaging Conference 2016, Paper 9787-52, 2016
Due to the aging population, spinal diseases get more and more common nowadays; e.g., lifetime risk of osteoporotic fracture is 40% for white women and 13% for white men in the United States. Thus the numbers of surgical spinal procedures are also increasing with the aging population and precise diagnosis plays a vital role in reducing complication and

Gli2a protein localization reveals a role for Iguana/DZIP1 in primary ciliogenesis and a dependence of Hedgehog signal transduction on primary cilia in the zebrafish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: In mammalian cells, the integrity of the primary cilium is critical for proper regulation of the Hedgehog (Hh) signal transduction pathway.

A Comparative Genomics Study on the Molecular Evolution of Serotonin/Melatonin Biosynthesizing Enzymes in Vertebrates

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2020
Serotonin is important in vertebrates for its crucial roles in regulation of various physiological functions. Investigations on how the biosynthesizing enzymes mediate serotonin production and conversion during biological processes have been active in ...

Why Has the Ability to Regenerate Following CNS Injury Been Repeatedly Lost Over the Course of Evolution?

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2022
While many vertebrates can regenerate both damaged neurons and severed axons in the central nervous system (CNS) following injury, others, including all birds and mammals, have lost this ability for reasons that are still unclear.

Development and evolution of the neural crest: An overview [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The neural crest is a multipotent and migratory cell type that forms transiently in the developing vertebrate embryo. These cells emerge from the central nervous system, migrate extensively and give rise to diverse cell lineages including melanocytes ...

Evolutionarily Established Palmitoylation-Dependent Regulatory Mechanisms of the Vertebrate Glutamatergic Synapse and Diseases Caused by Their Disruption

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2021
Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain and various modifications have been established in the glutamatergic synapses.

Taurine Promotes Neurite Outgrowth and Synapse Development of Both Vertebrate and Invertebrate Central Neurons

open access: yesFrontiers in Synaptic Neuroscience, 2020
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is widely expressed throughout the human brain, heart, retina, and muscle tissues. Taurine deficiency is associated with cardiomyopathy, renal dysfunction, abnormalities of the developing nervous system, and

Roadkills in Northern Peninsular Malaysia

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2021
As Malaysia’s economy continues to grow, an ever-expanding road network is being built to support the new developments. Whilst roads increase accessibility to resources and connect human communities, they also bring with them a host of environmental ...
