U-series dating and taphonomy of Quaternary vertebrates from Brazilian caves
Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 2006Abstract The geochronology and taphonomy of internationally important fossil bearing cave deposits were studied, both in the semi-arid Northern Bahia area and the subtropical southeastern Lagoa Santa area of Brazil. Taphonomic analysis suggests that the processes responsible for bone accumulation in the Brazilian caves vary between sites, and ...

Abstract We compare the taphonomy of vertebrate assemblages from two long continental records—the early Paleogene of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, and the Neogene Siwalik sequence of northern Pakistan. Both sequences contain a similar array of fluvial facies, and the abundance of these facies differs among formations.

VERTEBRATE TAPHONOMY APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS OF ANCIENT FLUVIAL SYSTEMS
1987Taphonomy is concerned with reconstruction of biological and sedimentary processes leading to preservation of faunal remains in the stratigraphic record; traditionally, it has been viewed as a specialized branch of paleontology. Recognition of the value of taphonomic work on skeletal remains in fluvial sediments is a fairly new development.

Designing and teaching a vertebrate paleontology course for geoscience majors presents several challenges. Students often come to the course with limited or nonexistent biology backgrounds, and therefore may begin the semester anxious about their ability to master course material.

There is no doubt among paleontologists that the fossil record of terrestrial vertebrates is fragmented and unevenly distributed over space and time. The underlying causes of this patchiness derive from a combination of factors occurring before and after the deposition of vertebrate remains.

The Mio-Pliocene Pisco Formation (Ica Desert, Peru) is known for its vast outcrops, which preserve one of the richest concentrations of fossil marine vertebrates on Earth. During the last thirty years, punctual studies carried out on several exceptionally well preserved individual specimens highlighted the extraordinary diversity of vertebrates that ...

Pleistocene lower vertebrates from Šandalja cave (Istria, Croatia): paleoecology and taphonomy
2001The site Šandalja which is located 4 km away from the town of Pula (Istria, Croatia), is known not only from the chopper and rich fauna of large mammals dated to the Late Early Pleistocene or perhaps to the Middle Pleistocene found in bone breccias (Šandalja 1 and Šandalja 2) but also for the Late Pleistocene faunal assemblages and the Upper ...
