Vertical Shear Instability in the Solar Nebula [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2015
AbstractWe quantify the thermodynamic requirement for the Vertical Shear Instability and evaluate its relevance to realistic protoplanetary disks as a potential route to hydrodynamic turbulence.

Vertical instability at IPNS RCS [PDF]

open access: yes2007 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC), 2007
The rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) of the intense pulsed neutron source (IPNS) at ANL accelerates > 3.0 times 1012 protons from 50 MeV to 450 MeV with 30-Hz repetition frequency. During the acceleration cycle, the rf frequency varies from 2.21 MHz to 5.14 MHz. Presently, the beam current is limited by a vertical instability.

Vertical shear instability in accretion discs [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1993
Two-dimensional shear flows in the (R-z) and (φ-z) planes in thin accretion discs are studied. The vertical shear is set up by the resonant response of a disc with small tilt. It is shown that the flow is dynamically unstable, with growth rates in excess of ∼ 0.1 Ω −1 , corresponding to a growth time-scale of one orbital period at a given radius ...

Restoring Horizontal Stability of the Acromioclavicular Joint: Open Acromioclavicular Ligament Reconstruction and Repair With Semitendinosus Allograft

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques, 2020
Injuries to the acromioclavicular (AC) joint are common and comprise ∼12% of shoulder injuries. Stability to the AC joint depends on the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments for vertical stability and AC ligaments and capsular structures for horizontal ...

Vertical scale selection in inertial instability [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, 2007
The linear instability of a barotropic flow with uniform horizontal shear in a stratified rotating fluid is investigated with respect to perturbations invariant in the alongflow direction. The flow can be inertially unstable if there is sufficiently strong anticyclonic shear, but only for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers Re. We determine the critical

Convective instabilities in horizontally propagating vertical chemical fronts [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2009
The effect of convection on horizontally propagating fronts arising in the acid-catalyzed reaction of chlorite and tetrathionate ions is investigated experimentally in vertically oriented narrow reaction vessels of various heights. A stable finger develops which can be characterized by its mixing length defined as the standard deviation of the average ...

SURGICAL TREATMENT OF VERTICALLY UNSTABLE INJURIES OF THE PELVIS (TYPE C ACCORDING АО CLASSIFICATION)

open access: yesTravmatologiâ i Ortopediâ Rossii, 2012
The study is based on the analysis of the results of surgery on 34 patients with vertically unstable injuries of the pelvis at the age 16-61 operated on the period 2006-2010. Two following major methods of operative treatment were used: external fixation

Striped texture of submesoscale fields in the northeastern Baltic Proper: Results of very high-resolution modelling for summer season

open access: yesOceanologia, 2022
Very high-resolution modelling of the northeastern Baltic Proper shows that preferentially elongated along the flow, submesoscale inhomogeneities of hydrodynamic fields or stripes of the order of 10–20 km in length and 1 km in width, are typical for ...

Vortices and the saturation of the vertical shear instability in protoplanetary discs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
If sufficiently irradiated by its central star, a protoplanetary disks falls into an equilibrium state exhibiting vertical shear. This state may be subject to a hydrodynamical instability, the `vertical shear instability' (VSI), whose breakdown into ...
