Coordination of segments in the vertical jump
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 1986Three general patterns of segmental coordination (i.e., sequential [SEQ], simultaneous [SIM], and modified simultaneous [MSIM]) have been hypothesized for jumping. The purposes of this study were to describe the pattern of segmental coordination used in vertical jumping and to determine if skilled jumpers displayed distinguishing patterns of ...

The effects of arms and countermovement on vertical jumping
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 1990Countermovement and arm-swing characterize most jumping. For determination of their effects and interaction, 18 males jumped for maximal height from a force platform in all four combinations of arm-swing/no-arm-swing and countermovement/no-countermovement. For all jumps, vertical velocity peaked 0.03 s before and dropped 6-7% by takeoff.

Contributive Components in the Vertical Jump
Research Quarterly. American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1968Abstract The degree of contribution to performance of the vertical jump by leg components plantar flexors, knee extensors, and hip extensors was determined experimentally and tested by analysis of covariance. One control and four experimental groups from 100 college men at Brigham Young University were randomly assigned to varying muscle strengthening ...

Effects of Isometric Training on Vertical Jumping
Research Quarterly. American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1964Abstract Sixty-three college men were divided into two equated groups on the basis of their initial ability to exert isometric force upward against shoulder pads of a specially constructed device. Measurements were made and the apparatus adjusted to fit each subject so that the knees were flexed to the angle at which a vertical jump is usually ...

The Nature of the Vertical Jump Test and the Standing Broad Jump
Research Quarterly. American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1966Abstract The jump-reach test and standing broad jump were investigated as tests of muscle power. The criterion used was the power lever. An analysis of the variance components of the two jump tests revealed that each test involved a large proportion of specific variance. Of the common factor variance muscle power appeared to be only one component.

Segmental contribution to forces in vertical jump
European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1978Performance of a vertical jump was analyzed with respect to the contribution of the different body segments to the forces acting on the whole body center of gravity. Both cinematograph and force-platform techniques were employed. The data disclosed that the take-off velocity in vertical jumps was caused by the different components as follows: knee ...

Vertical jump coordination: fatigue effects
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2002The aim of this study was to investigate the segmental coordination of vertical jumps under fatigue of the knee extensor and flexor muscles.Eleven healthy and active subjects performed maximal vertical jumps with and without fatigue, which was imposed by requesting the subjects to extend/flex their knees continuously in a weight machine, until they ...

A biomechanical comparison of the vertical jump, power clean, and jump squat
Journal of Sports Sciences, 2014The purpose of this study was to compare the kinetics, kinematics, and muscle activation patterns of the countermovement jump, the power clean, and the jump squat with the expectation of gaining a better understanding of the mechanism of transfer from the power clean to the vertical jump.

The physics of vertical jumping is described as an interesting and “relevant” illustration for motivating students in a general physics course to master the kinematics and dynamics of one dimensional motion. The equation for the height of the jump is derived (1) from the kinematic equations and Newton's laws of motion and (2) from the conservation of ...

Usefulness of the Jump-and-Reach Test in Assessment of Vertical Jump Performance
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2010The objective was to estimate the reliability and criterion-related validity of the Jump-and-Reach Test for the assessment of squat, countermovement, and drop jump performance of 32 male Brazilian professional volleyball players. Performance of squat, countermovement, and drop jumps with different dropping heights was assessed on the Jump-and-Reach ...
