Strategies for achieving real‐world robustness in topologically engineered surfaces with special wettability

open access: yesDroplet, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2026.
Engineered topologies surfaces with special wettability are promising for their ability to precisely customize wetting behaviors and incorporate versatile functionalities, setting them apart from randomly structured surfaces. However, robustness and durability have been hurdles to their broad application.

ANEMONE Global's First eDNA‐Based Assessment: Insights Toward a Standardized Global Monitoring Network

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
Using a standardized eDNA metabarcoding workflow across 12 countries, ANEMONE Global reveals large‐scale patterns in coastal fish biodiversity shaped by habitat complexity, ocean basin, and diel variation. The study demonstrates the feasibility of globally coordinated, high‐resolution marine biodiversity monitoring using eDNA.

The contribution of a surge event to infilling in a barrier‐enclosed estuary: Insights from field observations

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 1, January 2026.
A storm surge in a sheltered, barrier‐enclosed estuary amplified water levels and flood dominance, increasing suspended sediments and altering transport pathways. Observations showed a sixfold rise in flux to the upper estuary, underscoring storms' major role in estuarine infilling processes.

Coral Reef Protection May Help Avert Risks to People, Property, and Economic Activity Caused by Projected Reef Degradation

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Degradation of coral reefs over the past several decades has caused regional‐scale erosion of the shallow seafloor that serves as a protective barrier against coastal hazards along southeast Florida, USA. How future change in coral reefs may affect coastal flooding, however, has been less attended than other factors contributing to increasing ...

A review of the geologic hazards along the Lake Erie shore of Ohio from Cleveland to Ashtabula [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The principle hazard along the Lake Erie shore from Cleveland to Ashtabula is shore erosion. While the average rate of shoreline recession has decreased, some unprotected stretches have seen a major increase in the amount of land being lost.

Wave overtopping at dykes with topped vertical wall - Impacts of oblique wave attack [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Hydraulic model tests at a scale of 1:10 are carried out in a 40 m x 25 m wave basin with a state-of-the-art 3D wave generator in order to collect wave overtopping data at vertical walls and dykes with topped vertical walls.

Prediction of overwash in alongshore variable barrier islands [Previsão da ocorrência de galgamentos em ilhas barreira com variabilidade longilitoral] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Overwash prediction is very important for coastal zone management. This work intends to identify alongshore variations in storm impact and evaluate the role of sub-aerial and submerged morphologies in overwash occurrence.

Caution Ahead: Overdue Investments in New York's Aging Infrastructure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
While Superstorm Sandy focused much-needed attention on key pieces of New York City's infrastructure, the city faces a number of other infrastructure vulnerabilities that have little to do with storm-preparedness -- from aging water mains and ...

CONTRIBUTION OF MOMENTUM IN TSUNAMI LOADING ON A VERTICAL SEAWALL

open access: yesCoastal Engineering Proceedings
Tsunami are often very long wavelength, long period gravity waves generated in deep water. Some of the largest and most damaging tsunami are associated with subduction zone ocean trenches and their related convergent plate boundaries such as the Aleutian Islands (1946), Chile (1960), Indian Ocean (2004) and Tohoku (2011) events.
