OCTOID: A Soft Robotic System Featuring Programmable Shape Morphing and Dynamic Structural Coloration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by octopuses, actuating legs based on soft materials are fabricated with programmed chiroptical properties and mechanical behaviors to achieve dynamic color modulation and reversible shape morphing, and these legs are developed into a modular OCTOID system.

Magnetic field twist driven by remote convective motions: Characteristics and twist rates [PDF]

open access: yes
It is generally believed that convective motions below the solar photosphere induce a twist in the coronal magnetic field as a result of frozen-in physics. A question of interest is how much twist can one expect from a persistent convective motion, given

Twisted flux tube emergence from the convection zone to the corona

open access: yes, 2007
3D numerical simulations of a horizontal magnetic flux tube emergence with different twist are carried out in a computational domain spanning the upper layers of the convection zone to the lower corona.

Encoding Magnetic Anisotropies in Digital Light Processing 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid magnetic device—combining a coaxial coil within a nested Halbach array—is presented, integrated into a DLP 3D printer to enable spatially resolved magnetic field control. This system enables complex, multimodal responses by programming liquid crystal elastomer resins for magnetic and thermal actuation, and by inducing electrically conductive ...

Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams under Pure Torsion

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, 2018
Practically, torsion is normally combined with flexure and shear actions. Even though, the behavior of reinforced concrete continuous beams under pure torsion is investigated in this study. It was performed on four RC continuous beams under pure torsion.

Chiral Magnetic Phases in Moire Bilayers of Magnetic Dipoles

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research
In magnetic insulators, the sense of rotation of the magnetization is associated with novel phases of matter and exotic transport phenomena. Aimed to find new sources of chiral magnetism rooted in intrinsic fields and geometry, twisted square bilayers of

Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon for Augmented Reality Displays

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
In this paper, we review liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) technology and focus on its new application in emerging augmented reality (AR) displays. In the first part, the LCoS working principles of three commonly adopted LC modes—vertical alignment ...

Thermo‐Mechanically Recyclable Smart Textiles from Circularly Knitted Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Reprogrammable multi‐material smart textiles knitted from liquid crystal elastomer fibers undergo 2D and 3D deformation under thermal and photo stimuli. Circularly knitted tubular structures reversibly contract in radial and axial directions, enabling autonomous climbing, liquid release, and micro pumping.
