Very Long Baseline Interferometry in Italy Wide-field VLBI imaging and astrometry and prospects for an Italian VLBI network including the Sardinia Radio Telescope

open access: yes, 2010
In this thesis the use of widefield imaging techniques and VLBI observations with a limited number of antennas are explored. I present techniques to efficiently and accurately image extremely large UV datasets. Very large VLBI datasets must be reduced into multiple, smaller datasets if today’s imaging algorithms are to be used to image them.

Differential Very Long Baseline Interferometry (delta VLBI) spacecraft tracking system demonstration. Part 2: Data acquisition and processing [PDF]

open access: yes
A set of experiments in the use of Differential Very Long Baseline Interferometry (delta VLBI) for spacecraft navigation were completed. Data using both Voyager spacecraft and a single quasar were acquired during the Jupiter encounter time period.

A determination of the radio-planetary frame tie from comparison of Earth orientation parameters [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
The orientation of the reference frame of radio source catalogs relative to that of planetary ephemerides, or 'frame tie,' can be a major systematic error source for interplanetary spacecraft orbit determination.

An accuracy assessment of Magellan Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) [PDF]

open access: yes
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of the Magellan spacecraft's angular position and velocity were made during July through September, 1989, during the spacecraft's heliocentric flight to Venus. The purpose of this data acquisition and

Resolving the Base of the Relativistic Jet in M87 at 6Rsch Resolution with Global mm-VLBI

open access: yesGalaxies, 2016
M87 is one of the nearest radio galaxies with a central Super-Massive Black Hole (SMBH) and a prominent relativistic jet. Due to its close distance to the observer and the large SMBH mass, the source is one of the best laboratories to obtain strong ...

A very long baseline interferometry sky survey [PDF]

open access: yes
A systematic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) sky survey, undertaken to find a suitable set of compact celestial radio sources from which a more complete VLBI reference frame can be constructed, discussed.

The future of VLBI has begun!

open access: yes, 2010
With the exceptional progress e-VLBI has achieved over the last three years, the VLBI of the future has already started. At least for the EVN, it is argued that at some point all VLBI operations should be done in e-VLBI mode.

VLBI imaging of extremely high redshift quasars at 5 GHz [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of ten very high redshift (z>3) quasars at 5 GHz. The sources 0004+139, 0830+101, 0906+041, 0938+119 and 1500+045 were observed in September 1992 using a global VLBI array, while 0046+063, 0243 ...

Studies of regional and global tectonics and the rotation of the earth using very-long baseline interferometry [PDF]

open access: yes
Progress in the areas of data analysis, atmospheric delay calibration and software conversion is reported. Over 800 very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) experiments were analyzed in the last 6 months.

Effects of Earth’s Oblateness on Black Hole Imaging through Earth–Space and Space–Space Very Long Baseline Interferometry

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Earth-based very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) has made rapid advances in imaging black holes. However, due to the limitations imposed on terrestrial VLBI by the Earth’s finite size and turbulent atmosphere, it is imperative to have a space-based ...
