High‐Throughput MicroED for Probing Ion Channel Dynamics
High‐throughput MicroED offers a new approach for visualizing ion channel dynamics. This approach reveals NaK’s sodium binding modes and NaK2CNG’s potassium‐induced selectivity filter dilation and gating. By capturing these distinct structures, this work challenges traditional models of ion channel permeation and selectivity. Abstract Ion channels play

On computational fluid dynamics models for sinonasal drug transport: relevance of nozzle subtraction and nasal vestibular dilation [PDF]
Generating anatomically realistic three-dimensional (3D) models of the human sinonasal cavity for numerical investigations of sprayed drug transport presents a host of methodological ambiguities. For example, subject-specific radiographic images used for 3D reconstructions typically exclude spray bottles.

Bedside differentiation of vestibular neuritis from central "vestibular pseudoneuritis". [PDF]
Acute unilateral peripheral and central vestibular lesions can cause similar signs and symptoms, but they require different diagnostics and management.

A Wearable Soft Actuator for Directional Tactile Stimulation: Design and Testing
A wearable actuator able to produce directional tactile stimulation is obtained by embedding a planar shape memory spring in silicone matrix. The matrix is designed taking into account skin characteristics and leveraging its multifunctionality: it acts as a bias load, improves the thermal behavior of the spring and wearability.

The Gain-Time Constant Product Quantifies Total Vestibular Output in Bilateral Vestibular Loss
Patients with inner ear damage associated with bilateral vestibular impairment often ask “how much damage do I have.” Although there are presently three clinical methods of measuring semicircular canal vestibular function; electronystagmography (ENG or ...

Analysis of Smooth Pursuit Assessment in Virtual Reality and Concussion Detection using BiLSTM [PDF]
The sport-related concussion (SRC) battery relies heavily upon subjective symptom reporting in order to determine the diagnosis of a concussion. Unfortunately, athletes with SRC may return-to-play (RTP) too soon if they are untruthful of their symptoms.

Vestibular and Oculomotor Function in Children with Cerebral Palsy [PDF]
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability of childhood, caused by non-progressive permanent injury to the fetal or infant’s brain. Visual and balance impairments are prominent hallmarks of these disorders.

Worth the Effort: Lessons for Discovery and Care From an Unusual Case of Gorlin Syndrome
ABSTRACT Gorlin‐Goltz Syndrome (GGS) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder encompassing a diverse range of clinical manifestations, including congenital anomalies and predisposition to cancer. Pathogenic variants in PTCH1 and SUFU account for up to 79% and 6% of cases, respectively. Currently, an estimated 15%–27% of individuals with a clinical

Spike timing regularity in vestibular afferent neurons: How ionic currents influence sensory encoding mechanisms [PDF]
Primary vestibular neurons are categorized as either regularly or irregularly firing afferents that use rate and temporal sensory encoding strategies, respectively. While many factors influence firing in these neurons, recent work in mammalian vestibular afferents has demonstrated a rich diversity in ion channels that drive spiking regularity.

Autosomal Recessive Cerebellar Ataxias: Translating Genes to Therapies
Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias are disabling neurodegenerative genetic conditions affecting balance and coordination. Advancements in genomic testing have improved diagnosis, leading to a new focus on the development of targeted precision therapeutics addressing cellular, biochemical, and genetic disease mechanisms with a resulting emphasis on ...
