Effects of cochlear implantation on vestibular function

Vestnik otorinolaringologii, 2021
The literature review is devoted to the effects arising from the effect of a cochlear implant on the vestibular system. Due to the pronounced anatomical proximity and physiological interaction of vestibular receptors with the cochlea, the installation of a cochlear implant and its electrical activity are associated with an effect on the vestibular ...

Vestibular Function and Cochlear Implant

ORL, 1998
The authors illustrate their personal experience relating to 32 patients, aged between 12 and 74 years, undergoing cochlear implant, in whom vestibular reflexes were evaluated before and after surgery. This series did not include cases of areflexia, but only 1 case of reduced vestibular reflexia consequently to surgery.

Vestibular function and cochlear implant

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2014
Vestibular lesions are found after cochlear implantation in 23-100 % of cases. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the vestibular function before and after implantation while focusing its feasibility. This prospective study included 35 patients, mean age 49 years.

Cochlear Implant and Vestibular Function

Otology & Neurotology, 2006
To document incidences of vestibular dysfunction after cochlear implantation and investigate why it occurs. This work was also motivated by a desire to provide the basis for better preoperative counseling and postoperative vestibular therapy to cochlear implant patients.Melbourne Cochlear Implant Clinic at a tertiary referral hospital.Prospective ...

Vestibular Effects of Cochlear Implantation

The Laryngoscope, 2004
AbstractObjectives/Hypothesis: Cochlear implantation (CI) carries with it the potential risk for vestibular system insult or stimulation with resultant dysfunction. As candidate profiles continue to evolve and with the recent development of bilateral CI, understanding the significance of this risk takes on an increasing importance.Study Design: Between

Vestibular implants: The first steps in humans

2011 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2011
Currently there is no efficient treatment for patients with severe bilateral vestibular function impairment. Presence of oscillopsia is their main complaint. It has a significant negative impact on their quality of life. Recently it has been shown that angular vestibulo-ocular reflex can be partially restored in animals.

Vestibular Function in Patients With Cochlear Implantation

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 2001
The aim of this work was to determine the influence of cochlear implantation (CI) on vestibular canal and otolithic function. Between 1995 and 1999, 15 patients (6 females, 9 males; 9-77 years old) underwent a vestibular examination before and after CI.

Influence of cochlear implantation on vestibular function

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 2016
Conclusion Vestibular function in patients can be damaged following cochlear implantation. Therefore, assessing the pre-operative vestibular status, carefully choosing the side of implantation, and preserving function by using minimally invasive surgical techniques are important.

Vestibular Stimulation by Multichannel Cochlear Implants

The Laryngoscope, 1998
AbstractThe recipient of a Nucleus 22 multichannel cochlear implant began to experience severe vestibular stimulation related to the implant. This patient's experience initiated a study with the objective of determining the frequency of implant‐related vestibulo‐ocular stimulation.
