Vestibular nerve section

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 2001
Vestibular nerve section has been a reliable method to control dizziness caused by Meniere's disease. The surgery can be performed with 3 different approaches. Although the middle fossa and retrolabyrinthine approaches are well described, most vestibular nerve sections are now performed with the retrosigmoid approach.

Segmental Analysis of the Vestibular Nerve and the Efferents of the Vestibular Complex

The Anatomical Record, 2018
ABSTRACTUse of a segmental approach in the study of vestibular centers in the hindbrain improves morphological and functional understanding of this region controlled byHoxgenes, among other molecular determinants. Here, we review accrued data about segmental organization of vestibular afferents and efferents.

The behavior of residual tumors and facial nerve outcomes after incomplete excision of vestibular schwannomas.

Journal of Neurosurgery, 2014
OBJECT The authors evaluated the behavior of residual tumors and facial nerve outcomes after incomplete excision of vestibular schwannomas (VSs). METHODS The case records of all patients who underwent surgical treatment of VSs were analyzed.

An Approach to the Vestibular Nerve in Chinchillas

Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 2004
Problem: Although there are many physiological and anatomic studies regarding the cochlear efferent system, its functional role in auditory processing is not fully understood. Sectioning of the vestibular nerve in chinchillas could thus create an experimental model for further in-depth study of this system. Methods: Eight adult male chinchillas were

Relation between discharge regularity and responses to externally applied galvanic currents in vestibular nerve afferents of the squirrel monkey.

Journal of Neurophysiology, 1984
Most vestibular nerve afferents can be classified as regularly or irregularly discharging. Two factors are theoretically identified as being potentially responsible for differences in discharge regularity.

Morphological Characterization of the Vestibular Nerve

Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1985
One of the goals of our research is to understand the mechanisms of vestibular compensation following labyrinthectomy; a surgical procedure used to alleviate vertigo and dizziness. Labyrinthectomy involves obliteration of the vestibular end organs with subsequent severance to the peripheral dendrites of the vestibular nerve.

Vestibular nerve section for Ménière's disease

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1976
In summary: (i) the fact that VNS spares auditory function makes it preferable to labyrinthectomy. A comparison of VNS and the "conservative" operations on the inner ear shown that they have much the same effect on hearing. VNS by controlling vertigo may also provide an additional benefit by eliminating one of the stress factors concerned in the ...

Are There Parallel Channels in the Vestibular Nerve?

Physiology, 1998
A popular concept in neurobiology is that sensory information is transmitted to the central nervous system over parallel channels of neurons that play different functional roles. But alternative organizing schemes are possible, and it is useful to ask whether some other framework might better account for the diversity of vestibular primary afferents.

Retrolabyrinthine approach to the vestibular nerve

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 1991
Vestibular nerve section is an accepted modality for treating disabling vertigo and disequilibrium in patients with peripheral labyrinthine disorders. The procedure provides a reliable denervation of the diseased ear, while preserving residual hearing in the great majority of cases.

Vestibular activation of sympathetic nerve activity

Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 2003
AbstractAim: The vestibulosympathetic reflex refers to sympathetic nerve activation by the vestibular system. Animal studies indicate that the vestibular system assists in blood pressure regulation during orthostasis. Although human studies clearly demonstrate activation of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) during engagement of the otolith ...
