No Effect of Steady Rotation on Solid $^4$He in a Torsional Oscillator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We have measured the response of a torsional oscillator containing polycrystalline hcp solid $^{4}$He to applied steady rotation in an attempt to verify the observations of several other groups that were initially interpreted as evidence for macroscopic ...

Fast‐Responding O2 Gas Sensor Based on Luminescent Europium Metal‐Organic Frameworks (MOF‐76)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Luminescent MOF‐76 materials based on Eu(III) and mixed Eu(III)/Y(III) show rapid and reversible changes in emission intensity in response to O2 with very short response times. The effect is based on triplet quenching of the linker ligands that act as photosensitizers. Average emission lifetimes of a few milliseconds turn out to be mostly unaffected by

Preliminary design of a test rig for combining passive nonlinear isolation with active control

open access: yes, 2012
Resilient elements are typically used to isolate delicate equipment from a vibrating host structure. Conventionally, these isolators are designed to operate in their linear region, but more recently nonlinear isolators have been employed to increase the ...

Continuous‐Flow Photocatalytic Degradation of Glyphosate and Aminomethylphosphonic Acid Under Simulated Sunlight with TiO2‐Coated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Membrane

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Glyphosate (GLY) and its primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), are photodegraded using a poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane with immobilized titanium dioxide (PVDF‐TiO2) in a continuous flow‐through operation under solar light. At optimized conditions, the PVDF‐TiO2 membrane achieved 95% GLY and 80% AMPA removal with •O2− as the ...

Six-Dimensional Hybrid Broadband Vibration Isolation Based on Singular Parallel Mechanisms

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2012
Six-dimensional broadband vibration isolation is necessary for precision manufacturing, testing and assembly. A six-dimensional nearly zero-stiffness mechanism based on singular parallel mechanisms was proposed, which was taken as the main structure of ...

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Vibration isolation for line of sight performance improvement [PDF]

open access: yes
Diagrams of the Reaction Wheel Assembly (RWA) are presented along with charts and graphs illustrating jitter error model, induced vibration tests, radial displacement transfer function, and axial displacement power spectra density.

Defect‐Mediated Scintillation in Fully Inorganic Perovskites via Water‐Induced 0D/3D Phase Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A reproducible synthesis to control 3D/0D phase ratios via water‐tuned solvent–antisolvent methods is presented. Enhanced scintillation yield and ultrafast decay are achieved. Defect‐driven emission mechanisms are revealed through cathodoluminescence and radioluminescence, shedding light on the underexplored role of the 0D Cs4PbBr6 and mixed 0D/3D ...
