Vickers hardness concept in the light of Vickers impression
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1974Abstract Although Vicker's hardness equation is defined with reference to the total inclined area of the permanent impression, in reality, only the diagonals are measured for calculating hardness irrespective of the morphology of the impression. The occurrence of the diagonal in the Vicker's hardness equation (Hv=2W/d2.

Vickers hardness and compressive strength
Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1958Abstract Hardness and compression tests are reported for a wide variety of materials. A simple empirical method for relating hardness number to the stress-strain curve is suggested. The correlation obtained leads to the conclusion that the Vickers test is not at all sensitive to yield stresses corresponding to compressive strains greater than 0.15.

Influential factors on hardness uniformity of Vickers hardness blocks for high hardness range
Measurement, 2016Reference Vickers hardness blocks for high hardness range were developed from WC 9-Co and WC 6-Co mixtures by two different processes of powder metallurgy, conventional liquid phase sintering in hydrogen and sinter-HIP, in order to analyse the appropriateness of the manufacturing process and the influence of starting characteristics of the mixtures on ...

Vickers hardness measurement of ion implanted MgO
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1994Abstract The Vickers hardness was measured for single crystals of MgO(100) implanted with 130 keV or 1.8 MeV Ar+ ions and with 400 keV Xe2+ ions by means of the indentation technique with an applied load of 0.4–30 mN. Implantation with 130 keV Ar+ and 400 keV Xe2+ gave similar results in hardening of MgO surface layers.

Vickers hardness testing of sucrose single crystals
Journal of Crystal Growth, 1994Abstract Using a technique developed by Gillespie [BSc Thesis, University of Strathclyde, June 1982], single crystals of sucrose 3–5 mm on an edge were grown isothermally from high-purity aqueous solution at relatively high supersaturation. The crystal fracture behavior was assessed using Vickers indentation hardness testing to relate to observations

Vickers Hardness Indentations Measured with Atomic Force Microscopy
Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1998Abstract Vickers hardness indentations on a steel gage block (-900 HV) with diagonals between 3.4 and 44 µm have been measured with a calibrated atomic force microscope (AFM) and with an opticalbased method. From the AFM images the diagonals were measured from hard copies of diagonal profiles and automatically by image analysis.

Mixed alkali effect on Vickers hardness and cracking
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 2012Abstract Vickers indentation measurements were carried out on borate, silicate and aluminophosphate glasses, each series comprised of samples of different relative alkali ratios (Na/Na + Li). All the glass series exhibited nonlinear variations of hardness with relative alkali ratio, which was attributed to the reduced plastic flow of mixed alkali ...

Indentation Image Analysis for Vickers Hardness Testing
2018 15th International Conference on Electrical Engineering, Computing Science and Automatic Control (CCE), 2018The paper presents a novel algorithm for detection and measurement of indentations in Vickers hardness testing images, within a specific case of applied research on material quality evaluation based on image processing. The algorithm performs image segmentation by binarization, morphological filtering, and region growing, where the binarization ...

Correlation of the Mohs's scale of hardness with the Vickers's hardness numbers
Mineralogical Magazine and Journal of the Mineralogical Society, 1949Mineralogists have long been accustomed to describe hardness with the aid of a scale devised by Friedrich Mohs, who lived from 1773 to 1839. The test is qualitative, each mineral in the scale being capable of scratching those that precede it, but the ten minerals have held their ground as a useful representative series with which it is now interesting ...
