Biometric characteristics in vicuñas (Vicugna Vicugna mensalis)
Small Ruminant Research, 2019Abstract The objectives were to determine the phenotypic correlations between biometric characteristics and obtain predictive functions of vicuna body weight (BW) at shearing. Measurements were recorded in 69 males and 119 females in the area of influence of the Campesino Community of Huachocolpa, Huancavelica region of Peru, during the annual ...

State-dependent foraging theory posits that animals should make foraging decisions based on energetic condition, where animals with fewer energetic reserves prioritize foraging over other behaviors, including antipredator behaviors. However, few studies have investigated these trade-offs at an individual level in wild, free-ranging animals.

Fibre characteristics of vicuña (Vicugna vicugna mensalis)
Small Ruminant Research, 2010Abstract Characteristics of body and fleece weight, and fleece and fibre quality were evaluated in vicunas ( Vicugna vicugna mensalis ) captured for live shearing in Huancavelica, Peru. A total of 305 animals were weighted and shorn between 2003 and 2008. Fibre samples from 104 animals shorn in 2008 were analysed using optical fibre diameter analyser

Follicular activity and hormonal secretory profile in vicuna (Vicugna vicugna)
Theriogenology, 2004The objective of the present study was to characterize ovarian activity in non-mated vicunas, relating ovarian structures (evaluated by transrectal ultrasonography, daily for 30 days) to changes in plasma concentrations of estradiol-17beta and progesterone.

One animal of each sex (Catskill Game Farm, Catskill, New York, USA) was studied by the lymphocyte technique. Many elements are difficult to classify (subtelocentrics or acrocentrics); however, the karyotypes are similar to other camelidae published in that seven pairs of small metacentric chromosomes can readily be distinguished.

The objective of the present study was to determine the composition of the vicuña (V. vicugna mensalis) diet at the end of the drought period (November, 2019) in the San Cristobal de Lucanas Community, in the department of Ayacucho, Peru. Eight sites were chosen, where vicuñas were observed grazing in Pajonal (tussock grassland), Cesped (short ...

Aspects of play behaviour of vicuña, Vicugna vicugna
Small Ruminant Research, 1994Abstract Calves and yearling vicunas (Vicugna vicugna) were observed in the INTA-Abrapampa, Jujuy, Argentina. Vicunas played more early in the morning and late afternoon, and generally play behaviour was performed between two animals belonging to the same family. About 20% of playing included calves from different families.

Capture of the vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) for sustainable use: Animal welfare implications
Biological Conservation, 2006Abstract The current program of vicuna conservation includes their live-capture for wool harvest in the Andes Region in northern Chile. Here, we describe studies that assess the impacts on the species of different variables relating to the capture process.

The aim of the present study was two-fold. First, to evaluate the effect of exogenous progesterone on ovarian follicular dynamics in order to assess its ability to synchronize ovarian activity in the vicuna. Secondly, to evaluate the ovarian response to the treatment with eCG through the observation of the structures developed in the ovaries ...
