Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis in an alpaca (Vicugna pacos) [PDF]

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, 2012
Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare, familial disease of unknown aetiology characterised by intra‐alveolar formation and accumulation of microliths. Multiple formalin‐fixed tissues were submitted from a 5‐month‐old female alpaca that died suddenly without significant clinical signs.

Rhododendron poisoning in alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in Northern Germany. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Res Commun
AbstractPoisoning is often suspected to be the origin of disease in South American camelids (SACs) by owners, but only in a few cases this assumption can be confirmed. In small ruminants, rhododendron poisoning is a common emergency for livestock veterinarians. However, this condition has rarely been reported in SACs so far.

Histological evaluation of the alpaca (Vicugna pacos) vomeronasal organ. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Vet Med Sci
Little is known about the neuronal structure of the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a receptor organ responsible for pheromone perception, in the alpaca (Vicugna pacos). This study was performed to determine the localization of neuronal elements, including protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), a pan-neuronal marker, olfactory marker protein (OMP), a marker of ...

Laterality in roe deer embryos implantation

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 339, Issue 10, Page 994-1002, December 1, 2023., 2023
In roe deer ovulation occurs with the same frequency in the left and right ovary. We revealed a higher frequency of embryos implantation in the left uterine horn in odd litter size. Embryos migration and a greater proportion of reproductive wastage in the right uterine horn drive these outcomes.

Actinobacillus vicugnae sp. nov., isolated from alpaca (Vicugna pacos)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2019
Ten strains of an Actinobacillus-like organism were isolated from alpaca (Vicugna pacos) in the UK over a period of 5 years, with no known epidemiological linkages. The isolates are distinct, based on both phenotype and genotype, from any previously described Actinobacillus species.

The prospects of poop: a review of past achievements and future possibilities in faecal isotope analysis

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 98, Issue 6, Page 2091-2113, December 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT What can the stable isotope values of human and animal faeces tell us? This often under‐appreciated waste product is gaining recognition across a variety of disciplines. Faecal isotopes provide a means of monitoring diet, resource partitioning, landscape use, tracking nutrient inputs and cycling, and reconstructing past climate and environment.

Evolution of posture in amniotes–Diving into the trabecular architecture of the femoral head

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 8, Page 1150-1165, August 2023., 2023
We use 3D microanatomical parameters measured at the femoral head to study femoral posture in amniotes. We show that these parameters are not good indicators of femoral posture. Methods of ancestral state reconstruction hold great promise for improving our understanding of the evolution of posture in amniotes.
