We retrospectively studied the safety and utility of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in the treatment of spontaneous hemopneumothorax. Of 128 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax operated on our hospital from April 1988 to October 1997, hemopneumothorax developed in 8 cases (2 cases treated by thoracotomy and 6 by VATS).
