Improving video-mediated communication with orchestration

Computers in Human Behavior, 2012
Video-mediated communication (VMC) has become a popular communication medium. However, research to date suggests that the inherent constraints of VMC impair effective and efficient communication and task performance. We propose that these negative findings could be attributed to how the technology was used and propose the novel concept of communication

HANDY system for video-mediated communication

Proceedings of the International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology, 2009
In this paper, we propose an approach to enhance the interaction level of video-mediated communication, by using the idea of shared space, a designated area where both users will be able to interact with each other, simulating the sense of presence of one user into the second user's video image.

Reasoning for video-mediated group communication

2011 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2011
In this paper we present an approach to the reasoning required to support multi-location, multi-camera group-to-group video communication, which we call orchestration. Orchestration is akin to virtual directing: it has to ensure that each location displays the most adequate shots from all the other available sources.

Peripheral participation in video-mediated communication

International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 2000
The importance of overhearing, and other ways of monitoring communicative behaviour not explicitly directed at oneself, has been illustrated in numerous ethnographic studies of computer-supported cooperative work. This paper is concerned with a particular form of monitoring. A “peripheral participant” is defined as someone who has a legitimate interest

Video-Mediated Communication to Support Distant Family Connectedness

Clinical Nursing Research, 2012
It can be difficult to maintain family connections with geographically distant members. However, advances in computer–human interaction (CHI) systems, including video-mediated communication (VMC) are emerging. While VMC does not completely substitute for physical face-to-face communication, it appears to provide a sense of virtual copresence through ...
