On video formats and coding efficiency

1999 Digest of Technical Papers. International Conference on Consumer Electronics (Cat. No.99CH36277), 2001
This paper examines the efficiency of MPEG-2 coding for interlaced and progressive video, and compares de-interlacing and picture rate up-conversion before and after coding. We found receiver side de-interlacing and picture rate up-conversion (i.e. after coding) to give better image quality at a given data rate. In contrast with some other publications,

Transcoder architectures for video coding

Proceedings of the 1998 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, ICASSP '98 (Cat. No.98CH36181), 1998
This paper discusses the problem of transcoding H.263-based video streams. Two different models for transcoding are examined, rate reduction and resolution reduction. Results show that the computational complexity of the basic transcoding model can be reduced for each model by, on average, 39% and 23% without significant lose in quality.

Stereoscopic video coding in AVS

2011 Visual Communications and Image Processing (VCIP), 2011
This paper is an overview for AVS stereoscopic video coding technology, including two channels based inter-view prediction coding and stereo packing mode coding. The first one utilizes inter-view prediction to efficiently exploit the redundancy between the two channels of stereoscopic video.

Motion transforms for video coding

Proceedings of 3rd IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, 2002
Video coding standards use motion compensated prediction to reduce temporal redundancies. In general this is performed by computing motion vectors for predefined regions in the image (rectangular blocks), and transmitting these vectors as side-information.

Video Streaming with Network Coding

Journal of Signal Processing Systems, 2009
Recent years have witnessed an explosive growth in multimedia streaming applications over the Internet. Notably, Content Delivery Networks (CDN) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks have emerged as two effective paradigms for delivering multimedia contents over the Internet.

Distributed Video Coding with Trellis Coded Quantization

2006
In conventional video coding systems, the encoder performs predictive coding (motion estimation) to exploit the temporal similarity, which make its complexity much higher than that of the decoder. The Wyner-Ziv theory or Lossy Distributed Coding theory suggests that when frames are separately encoded but jointly decoded, similar coding efficiency could

Advances in Scalable Video Coding

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2005
Scalable video coding is attractive due to the capability of reconstructing lower resolution or lower quality signals from partial bit streams. This allows for simple solutions in adaptation to network and terminal capabilities. Different modalities of scalability are specified by video coding standards like MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
