Perhaps no single group of people in medieval Europe has been stereotyped as extensively as the Vikings. While popular culture usually portrays these people (who originated in Scandinavia, an area comprising Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) as one-dimensional, bloodthirsty marauders in horned helmets, the reality is more complex.

Vikings

In the late spring of 793 CE, a group of longboats (seagoing vessels that were also designed for shallow waters, which allowed for river travel and beach landings) appeared off the island of Lindisfarne on the northeastern coast of England. The island was the site of a monastery founded there about 150 years earlier by Saint Aidan of Iona.
