Viruses are important causes of diarrhea. In healthy adults, the main clinical manifestation is acute, self-limited gastroenteritis. Advances in molecular diagnostics have shown that epidemics of acute gastroenteritis most frequently are due to caliciviruses spread through contaminated food or through person-to-person contact.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus is the most important viral pathogen of the bovine fetus. After birth it is responsible for two clinically dissimilar conditions: BVD and mucosal disease. It also causes significant losses as a result of its interaction with other pathogens, enhancing their morbidity in dual infections.

Until the early 1970s, little evidence existed to strongly implicate viruses as important causes of human diarrhea. Earlier, there had been an occasional statistical association of enterovirus and adenovirus recovery from infants with diarrhea when compared to recovery rates of well children.

It is now well known that several viruses are responsible for acute diarrhoea or gastroenteritis in both children and adults. These viruses are difficult to identify since most of them cannot be isolated by stool cultures on cells. The reality of proven reinfection by some of these organisms is not always clearly understood, even though the existence ...

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is an endemic infection of cattle caused by an RNA virus of the genus pestivirus of the family Togaviridae. Infection is usually inapparent but can result in abortion or congenital anomalies, respiratory signs or a frequently fatal systemic disease (mucosal disease) characterized by diarrhea, necrosis, and erosions of the ...

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is prevalent worldwide and causes high economic losses in cattle due to a variety of disease syndromes. BVD is caused by three bovine pestiviruses, bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV-1), BVDV-2 and HoBi-like pestivirus (HoBiPeV) with considerable genetic and antigenic heterogeneity.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea Infection in Pigs
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1971SUMMARY Sixty-six pigs were exposed experimentally to bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus. Several strains of the virus and routes of administration were utilized. The immunologic, pathologic, serologic, and virologic responses of pigs in selected groups were determined. In a group of pigs exposed twice to a field strain of virus, the serologic responses

Viruses are one of the most frequent causes of acute infectious gastroenteritis. Thus, rotaviruses are responsible for 40-60%--and in winter sometimes for over 90% - of diarrhoea in infants. These viruses may also cause disease in adults, but small viruses of a size of about 27 nm, such as the Norwalk agent, play a much more important role.

In the developing countries diarrhoea ranks among the most frequent diseases: 5-18 million children are estimated to die annually from gastro-intestinal infections. But also in Europe and the USA diarrhoea is of utmost medical importance, especially among children and infants.
