Viral diversity and dynamics in an infant gut
Research in Microbiology, 2008Metagenomic sequencing of DNA viruses from the feces of a healthy week-old infant revealed a viral community with extremely low diversity. The identifiable sequences were dominated by phages, which likely influence the diversity and abundance of co-occurring microbes. The most abundant fecal viral sequences did not originate from breast milk or formula,

Diverse viral cas genes antagonize CRISPR immunity
NatureProkaryotic CRISPR-Cas immunity is subverted by anti-CRISPRs (Acrs), which inhibit Cas protein activities when expressed during the phage lytic cycle or from resident prophages or plasmids1. Acrs often bind to specific cognate Cas proteins, and hence inhibition is typically limited to a single CRISPR-Cas subtype2.

The Role of Viral Diversity in HIV Pathogenesis
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes & Human Retrovirology, 1995From the time of seroconversion, patients who retain a high viral load are known to progress more rapidly to AIDS than individuals who have lower levels of HIV. Increased viral load is accompanied by decreasing CD4 cell numbers, and CD4 cell counts are therefore widely used as a diagnostic marker or predictor of progression in HIV patients.

Viral Diversity, Evolution, and Selective Pressure
2019The mechanisms of norovirus evolution are complex owing to the diversity among and within norovirus genogroups and genotypes. Evolutionary and epidemiological patterns vary among norovirus groups. Evolution in GII.4 noroviruses is more well-characterized than any other group, and several potential mechanisms of evolution have been described including ...

Vaccines and viral antigenic diversity.
Revue scientifique et technique (International Office of Epizootics), 2007Antigenic diversity among ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses occurs as a result of rapid mutation during replication and recombination/reassortment between genetic material of related strains during co-infections. Variants which have a selective advantage in terms of ability to spread or to avoid host immunity become established within populations ...

Environmental microbiology: Viral diversity on the global stage
Nature Microbiology, 2016Viruses, once thought of only as purveyors of disease, take centre stage, from the human microbiome to the oceans, as archives of global diversity and drivers of biogeochemical cycles.
