Virtual Worlds as Restorative Environments
2017The overpopulation of our planet creates pressures, not only upon natural and human-created environments, but also upon human well-being. Responding to the Australian government’s focus upon education as a means for improved health, well-being and economic competitiveness, schools and universities strive to embed environmental sustainability and ...

A restoration scheme for virtual networks using switches
2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems, 2012Despite the success story of Internet, the ossification in the underlying infrastructure has become a key problem for its development. Network virtualization allows de-ossifying the internet and it is already a hot research topic nowadays. Virtualization is a very successful technique for sharing and reusing of resources, resulting in higher efficiency.

Administration of restorable virtual path mesh networks
IEEE Communications Magazine, 1996This article addresses key issues related to the administration of ATM backbones based on virtual paths with embedded restoration capabilities. The concept of logical subnetworking according to the required reliability of service (RoS) is presented. This is followed by an investigation into alternative protocols for activating preplanned backup VPs ...

Fast restoration method of virtual resources on OpenStack
2015 12th Annual IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC), 2015We propose a restoration method that Pacemaker only detects a failure of physical server but a virtual resource arrangement scheduler calls OpenStack APIs to re-build virtual resources on multiple physical servers to restore them. We implemented the proposed method and showed the effectiveness of fast restoration through performance measurements.

Three-dimensional modeling for virtual relic restoration
IEEE Multimedia, 2000Relics change in quality when excavated from ruins and exposed to air and/or sunlight. This is one reason why we developed a new computer-based method to record and preserve archaeological properties. We propose a new method of 3D modeling of a relic shard that achieves sufficient accuracy and efficiency.

Virtual backup network for broadband network restoration
ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. Conference Record. Affiliated with SUPERCOMM'98 (Cat. No.98CH36220), 2002Survivability is one of the important issues in broadband networks, since even a single network element failure may cause a serious amount of data loss. There have been two main approaches for connection restoration: dynamic approach and backup approach.

An integrated tool for virtual restoration of Byzantine icons
IISA 2013, 2013An integrated tool that can be used for damage detection, shape restoration and texture restoration of faces appearing in Byzantine icons, is presented. The damage detection process involves the estimation of residuals obtained after the coding and reconstruction of face image regions using trained Principal Component Analysis (PCA) texture models ...

Virtual restoration of fragmented glass plate photographs
Proceedings of the 12th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37521), 2004In this paper we address the problem of restoration of fragmented glass plate photographs. We propose an algorithm based on the roto-translation of the fragments. A preprocessing adjustment in the contour combined with final interpolation is necessary to avoid artifacts.

A Virtual Restoration Strategy of 3D Scanned Objects
2011For creating model, laser scanner is frequently used to sample the object. In practice, due to surface disrepair, certain areas of the object are usually not sampled which will lead holes. This paper presents a strategy for filling holes. First, the k-nearest neighbors of scattered point cloud are found to project to the plane by the method of ALS ...

Using Virtual World Environments in Conservation-Restoration
2013 Sixth International Conference on Developments in eSystems Engineering, 2013In this paper it is presented a visualization method for the investigation data obtained on the surfaces of the artworks. This method delivers a series of visual data, in digital format, associated with a digital three dimensional replica of the investigated surface. The way of visualizing this kind of model is an interactive virtual world environment,
