An Improved Damping Method for Virtual Synchronous Machines

IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, 2019
A virtual synchronous machine (VSM) approach is proposed to integrate inverter-based distributed energy resource units into the power and energy system. VSMs emulate the model of a synchronous machine in the inverter's controller. Among different aspects, emulating the damper windings or devising an alternative damping strategy is critical.

A fuzzy integrated virtual synchronous machine based STATCOM replicating synchronous condenser

2021 8th International Conference on Signal Processing and Integrated Networks (SPIN), 2021
This paper is presented with a STATCOM connected grid system operating as VSM injecting reactive power into the grid. The controller of the STATCOM is modeled with virtual inertia introduced for the static module to replicate a dynamic synchronous machine.

Virtual synchronous machine

2007 9th International Conference on Electrical Power Quality and Utilisation, 2007
Demands in the area of electrical energy generation and distribution, as a result of energy policies, are leading to far reaching changes in the structure of the energy supply, which is characterised, on the one hand, by the substitution of conventional power stations by renewable energy generation, a decision which has already been made, and, on the ...

Virtual Synchronous Machine Based PV-STATCOM Controller

2020 IEEE First International Conference on Smart Technologies for Power, Energy and Control (STPEC), 2020
This article presents the concept of Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) used as a controller for PV-STATCOM in which the solar photovoltaic inverter is often used as a dynamic reactive power compensator-STATCOM. The proposed controller evinces how the VSM based controller is better in voltage regulation and synchronization than the conventional ...

A Single Stage Virtual Synchronous Machine

2019 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2019
Virtual Synchronous Machines (VSM) are proposed to support a power grid with high penetration of inverter-based distribution generation (DG) units. When the number of inverters connected to a grid increases, grid lacks the inertia that conventionally is introduced by the synchronous machine (SM). Therefore, VSMs are proposed to virtually introduce such

A virtual electric machine laboratory for synchronous machine application

Computer Applications in Engineering Education, 2008
AbstractEngineering education can reach the desired level if practical laboratory works are given together with the theory. In electrical engineering education, if foundation costs are considered the electrical machine labs become very important. Due to the increasing number of students accessing the university educational structures, the cost of ...

A Simplified Synchronous Machine Model for Virtual Synchronous Generator Implementation

2019 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2019
Virtual Synchronous Generator control of inverters is one of the promising solution to the insertion of renewable energies on Microgrids which still insure the system's stability. In this paper an improved synchronous machine model for the VSG-based inverter is proposed. The model represents the dynamics of the synchronous machine and has the advantage

Virtual Synchronous Machine fault ride through capability with Reactive Power Synchronization

2020 IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering and 2020 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Europe (EEEIC / I&CPS Europe), 2020
This paper presents the fault ride through capabilities of a proposed Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) control strategy for a Voltage Source Converter (VSC). In a grid which is evolving towards so-called smart grid, it is necessary to prove that power electronic converters have a good performance facing critical grid events. They must fulfill all grid

Design And Implementation of Virtual Synchronous Machine

2018 International Conference on Computing, Electronic and Electrical Engineering (ICE Cube), 2018
The increased penetration of renewable sources into the electric grid has opened new horizons for researchers. In this context, maintenance of system stability is the most important objective which needs an immediate consideration. The reason for such keen interest is that the renewable energy sources do not behave as the conventional power plants ...
